What do you think about this?

Until now, all the talk I've heard about trading Dontrelle has been for more prospects. But, what do you guys think about trading him for some quality bullpen help with proven track records? It seems that the majority of Marlins fans are opposed to trading Dontrelle, but at the same time, I think the majority of fans are getting desperate for some bullpen help. I just thought this was an interesting scenario, and wanted to see if it made the thought of trading Willis a bit more justifiable.

Uh, hell no. That's ridiculous.

Great idea. Maybe we can trade Cabrera and get in return a quality utility infielder with a proven track record as well.

Wow, take it easy on me, haha! I'm not at all suggesting that we just GIVE our star players away for free. Just with all the Willis trade rumors circulating, I'm wondering if maybe we shouldn't try to focus on snagging a quality bullpen guy or two plus prospects depending on the quality, rather than taking a gamble on trading him for prospects that may never pan out.

Capable bullpen help is both incredibly underrated and overrated at the same time.

Look at the A's for the past 7 seasons. They've gone through closer after closer and set-up staff after set-up staff and still are competitive. Arms capable of getting no more than 6 outs on their own are not incredibly expensive or irreplaceable, unless you over-pay for a name.

Trading for production in season, like we did with Urbina in 2003, is a different story, but there is absolutely no reason to "build around" the bullpen, which is exactly what it would be if we were to trade Dontrelle for bullpen arms.

Sweet I'll offer Ryan Freel.

Swift, I appreciate you putting some thought into your response and raising a good point. However, if we trade Willis for prospects, what's to say that they never pan out, and we end up "overpaying" for THEM? It seems like there are a couple other people on this site that are content with A) trying to find bullpen help on the current roster, which has really panned out so far....ahem....messenger, borowski, kensing, petit, vargas, wellemeyer, OR B) they're content with sitting on here and complaining about blown saves the rest of the season.

:lol :lol I rather sign Herges to a 3 year deal... Theres no way you trade a starter for bullpen man...Bullpens come and go, starters dont.. Marlins didnt have such a great bullpen in 03, but there were able to make some moves to aquire Urbina and patch things up.... You patch up bullpens if your a contender, you dont trade your ace

For the type of prospects Willis/Cabrera would bring, it's more likely than not they'll "pan out."

See: Ramirez, Hanley re: Beckett, Josh

You don't trade the 2003 NL ROY and 2005 Cy Young Award runner-up for a reliever. You just don't. If anything, you trade prospects for the proven reliever. And I'm not sure we're at that point yet. Lets see what Tank, Ungs, Bowyer and Resop can do before we cross that bridge. Even if they don't pan out, you don't trade away any top prospects for a reliever.

just make willis the closer and have him pitch the 8th and 9th anytime we are winning

Screw that, put in Willis the second we take the lead.

Even the best relievers are inconsistent from year to year. To build around them instead of starting pitching and a catcher, shortstop or centerfielder with all-star talent is every bit as risky as prospects. And far less productive if they were to pan out.

How about we never have a Trade Dontrelle Away thread again.

Will it kill this team to keep 2 players from last year.

Jesus.
