June 4, 200620 yr i e-mailed Mr. Frisario and liked the answer i got back, so i figured i'd post it. Me: "I'm a big fan of the Fish. Always have been, always will be. And, I think, the management's been good lately, in regards to who's getting to play, or be on the roster. But why is Matt Herges still with the club? He's had a few good inning, but he's blown a lot of games. Most of those games were earlier in the season, and he hasn't really pitched at all recently, but he's wasting a space on the 25 man roster. Franklyn German is supposedly being DFA'd to make room for Carlos Martinez. What's the point in that after he just had several good rehab starts? Why not cut Herges? " Joe: "Thanks for the question. Granted, Herges has had his struggles. But you need someone to log innings. Early on, Joe Girardi really didn't establish too many relief roles. He was still figuring out what he was working with and he wanted veterans on the back end. So Herges found himself in the eighth on game, and the ninth the next. And sometimes he was working 1-plus innings, which I never understood since with someone like him, you take whatever outs you can get, and then give another guy a shot. Remember, Matt was a non-roster invitee, so it's not like you could back on having a premiere guy there. I think what you're going to start seeing is young guys like Kensing, Messenger, Tankersley and Martinez (as he gets back into the groove) appearing in games where the Marlins are leading or the game is tied. Herges already has been appearing in the middle innings, sometimes coming in a middle of an inning, like he did in Atlanta. And in games where the Marlins are trailing, instead of going with guys like Kensing, a veteran like Herges can eat up innings. Relievers give up runs. And the other day when Herges gave up a run in the ninth to the Giants, that game was pretty much over at that time. Those are the type of innings I see Herges logging now. Herges and Borowski are good examples for the rookies in the pen. Keep in mind, many of these rookies have no idea about setting up big league hitters or any familiarity of some of these guys they are facing, and Herges can help in that capacity. I am a bit surprised the team gave up on German without seeing how he'd bounce back. Maybe there was something in his rehab appearances or side throwing sessions that showed his pitches weren't that lively. Rehab assignments are tough to measure because even if a guy throws a scoreless inning doesn't mean he was throwing great. German walks a lot of guys. Herges doesn't. I think in the second half of the season, as some of these younger guys get more experience, we may see all rookies in the bullpen. That means Herges and Borowski may not be around." i'm down with that :thumbup
June 9, 200620 yr I have not seen Herges in a long time. When did he last pitch? It seems like forever.

June 9, 200620 yr Meh, German is not a good pitcher. I know Herges sucks too, but neither one is worth a crap. It makes me laugh that people are getting worked up over it.
June 9, 200620 yr That has to be the most polite (and drawn-out) way to call someone a garbage-time pitcher.
June 9, 200620 yr German allowed too many walks Herges allowed many runs(w/hits). BB is one of most serious stats as a pitcher. So, Girardi chose veteran Herges , I think... and he'll give a chance in a losing-game or big runs game, we know.
June 9, 200620 yr i agree wit letting Herges go once its time to, but JoBo still has done pretty good wit us.
June 9, 200620 yr Author i agree wit letting Herges go once its time to, but JoBo still has done pretty good wit us. he's done decent, but i'd rather let someone like Martinez get a shot and bring up Pinto again.

I'm one of Joe Borowski's biggest criticiezers because I already suffered through his stint with the Cubs, but for now we need his stabilizing presence in the bullpen. Pinto has talent, but I don't want to see him pitching every 4-5 days when a guy as young as him should be getting his work in as a starter. I doubt he ever cracks our rotation barring a Dontrelle trade, but for now his trade is as a starter.
June 10, 200620 yr Maybe German just didn't wanted to be in the team while Herge is grateful he is still playing in a MLB team.
June 10, 200620 yr Author Maybe German just didn't wanted to be in the team while Herge is grateful he is still playing in a MLB team. well German accepted his move to AAA, so i'm assuming he wants to still be with the club, he just knows he needs to work on the walks. but Herges really is just a waste of a roster spot... if we're just using him as a "we already lost the game, throw someone in there spot" we can just pick someone from the stands to pitch.

June 10, 200620 yr Once again, both Herges and German suck something awful. Neither one will make a difference. They just went with the veteran.
June 10, 200620 yr I guess they pick Herge just to make the game more exciting for the other team with the double, and the clutch, and the HR, etc other then a boring long pitch count walk with no result in the inning.
