Marlins SWEEP!

What did Joe say to Olsen in the 7th?

Probably something to the extent of "this is your last batter, don't hold back."

hey Holly and Co

ESPN had "things around the majors" in the 9th inning of tonights Indians-Angels game

"7 multi-hr games today, Chris Young with a good outing, Marlins win 9/12"

They then went on to talk about the Marlins, Hanley, Cabs, Willis, Uggla for the next 8 minutes or so. I figured you guys would enjoy that considering how much crap y'all like to give ESPN. They aren't out to get the Marlins, I promise.

Gammons: "If the Marlins decide to trade Willis, they will get an absolute haul from the Dodgers or Diamondbacks. Cabrera wont be traded. Willis only goes if the Marlins think they can get 3 pieces for a championship team in 2 years."

I've never been on the "OMG ESPN hates teh Marlinz" bandwagon, but I was sure beginning to wonder after they didn't show ONE highlight on the 1-hour 7pm Baseball Tonight. I think that was the only game that didn't get coverage. I still can't figure that one out (unless I missed it).

it was actually closer to 2-3 minutes, and it was basically just in-game chatter in a then-14-0 blowout, with peter gammons doing most of the chatting.

I think it was pretty funny 2 weeks after the Marlins won the 2003 worlds series they talk about the Bos/NYY AL championship series more then the Marlins series and the Marlins/Cubs Series was badly ignore. Oh yeah the bonus CD in the 2k6 game that talk about World Series Championship was a big Yankee comercial! They skip the 1997 and 2003 series!

It was a good portion of the 9th inning... must have felt like 8 minutes. Either way, it was nice to hear. :thumbup

Since Mid-May my attitude towards this team has gone from cynical to optimistic. It seems the new players really are the players of the future and not just cheap replacements. Basically, I see the team now the same way I saw them in spring training.

"Hey Scott, if you dont want another black eye you better get this batter out."

With all the crap we gave Girardi at the beginning of the season he deserves a lot of the credit. I love his attitude with Olsen. That meeting in the 7th was great. And after the game I loved seeing his arm around Olsen, congratulating him on a good outing. He needed some tough love and it looks so far he has responded well to it.

Also, great to see Jacobs with his success in the 3 spot.

I went to bed right before the 9th inning :banghead . Why didn't I stay up. I am glad to see the ESPN guys saying some good things about the Marlins. They deserve some respect.

Joe did not deserve any of the crap he got. He needed to figure out where everybody best fit in the lineup.

Joe did not deserve any of the crap he got. He needed to figure out where everybody best fit in the lineup. Exactly. People came in with the expectation he would become the next Casey Stengal. He is too a rookie on a team of rookies. So all the crap he got was undeservedly.

I disagree. Girardi deserved a lot of criticism for his handling of the team in the first month of the season. However, as his knowledge of the team's strengths/weaknesses increased, Girardi has done a much better job of putting players in a position to succeed. For that, he deserves a tremendous amount of credit. His use of the bullpen the last week has been outstanding. However, it doesn't erase some of his earlier questionable decisions.

Our roster seems to be exponentially better with the additions of Borchard, Ross, Tank, Kensing (I can't even believe I just wrote that), and Messenger - all guys not on the starting roster. Also, let's not forget that Hermida - potentially our top prospect - is back. But, with this improved roster, Girardi has really improved his overall management of the team, so he clearly deserves praise for our play the last two weeks. I guess this team needed to hit rock bottom (the Tampa series) before we started to put it together.

IMO, the single biggest reason why our young pitchers are coming along is the Vargas demotion. Not because Vargas isn't a great prospect. But, because his demotion demonstrated to all the players that nobody's roster spot was secure. You must perform in the big leagues to stay in the big leagues - no matter how highly touted you are, are what you did for this team last year. There is no doubt it has helped Olsen - he has admitted to it. And I'm sure that it impacted JJ and Nolasco as well.

If Girardi made the same pitching moves over the course of the last two weeks but the outcome was different, your post would be a Girardi bash instead (even though you actually do bash Girardi in a positive Marlins thread). :thumbup

Your entire post is based on the fact that the pitchers Girardi chose performed well. If the same pitchers had stunk it up you would be calling these same moves unwise and telling us all the reasons why he is not right for the job.

Girardi was there doing the warmup before the game. He should know who seem determine to play up to their best and who seem to be having an off day.

Girardi used Tank for only one hitter after using him the night before - even though he got Helton out. Great move, either way. Girardi gave Carlos Martinez the short hook when things weren't looking great. Great move, either way. Even though Girardi's talking with Olsen worked out well, he didn't leave Olsen in to blow the game for an entire inning. Great move, either way.

For what it is worth, the ultimate criteria of any managerial move is performance. If none of Girardi's moves worked out, I doubt there would be a thread praising his genius.

FYI, I have criticized MANY of Girardi's moves that didn't cost us a game, and sometimes had little effect on the outcome, solely because they were dumb moves that had the potential for disaster (the constant pinch running for our big bats in the 7th/8th innings of a two-run game, the overuse of pitchers, the failure to ever give anyone the short hook and to wait for the pitcher to give up 6 or 7 runs in an inning, etc.).

BTW, my prior post was a POSITIVE PRAISE of Girardi.

At least someone was impressed.

Me personally Ive heard the same speech one too many times and its very tiring.

Faulting Girardi for poor player performance early in the season is short sighted and knee jerk.

Now Girardi is making good managerial moves because the bullpen is executing?

Girardi has been doing an above average job from day one.

Your hidden jabs at him in your original posts (go read them, there in there) are amateur at best considering your post was "positive".
