Serious question about Big Papi...

Featured Replies

I think people are putting way too much emphasis on someone getting bigger. These guys are professional athletes. All they do is play their sport and work out. They are naturally going to get bigger. These days, with legal supplements and all that stuff, it helps them. Ortiz has not skipped a beat during this whole steroid thing. I highly highly doubt he's done anything... It's actually kind of disappointing to hear this brought up. Any time somebody begins to get bigger or start hitting better, are we gonna accuse them?

Using this logic, we should probably start to investigate Kirby Puckett for hitting 4 homeruns in 1985 and jumping to 31 in 1986...

Rightfield:

Fenway: 302

HHHM: 327

Right-Center:

Fenway: 380

HHHM: 367

Center:

Fenway: 420

HHHM: 408

Left Center:

Fenway: 379

HHHM: 385

Left:

Fenway: 310

HHHM: 343

Now I dont have a spray chart(maybe Passion does), but it just seems like the dimensions favor Ortiz at Fenway, everywhere except dead center and right center.

Also, Ortiz was 27 his first year in Boston. He got sporadic playing time in Minnesota. In 2000, in 415 ABs, he hit 10 hr(he was 24). At 25, in 2001, he hit 18 HR in 303 ABs. In 2002, at age 26, he hit 20 HR in 412 ABs. It seems more than anything he became better at pitch selection and his power developed at a less than normal rate.

He has been able to take advantage of it in Fenway.

Here's an easy question - what was Ortiz's hat size in Minnesota and what is his hat size, now?

What was Pujols' hat size in the minors and what is it now?

Barry's head practically QUADRUPLED in size from his rookie year. That does not happen.

BTW - Sammy Sosa was the nicest guy in baseball. That has nothing to do with how much he juiced.

Yes, that's going to happend. Why? Because the sport is dirty. Who fault is that? I place most of the fault under the MLB Player Association and a close second on Mr Selig office. Lets not act like these guys are victims for being questioned.

Good point I agree

i mean it's a possibility some guys just worked out but guys like bonds and ortiz and sosa didn't come up as big power hitters.

A guy like Pujols is most likely clean because he came up hitting HRs from the start and doesn't look too different than when he first came up.

You have no idea what you are talking about do you?

Ortiz was known for his power in his very good minor league career and he had good power numbers in the Dominican winter leagues. Ortiz has always been known for power.

Do you agree or disagree that Ortiz is quite a bit bigger than when he first came up?

David didn't start jacking until he got to boston, and there have been multiple people (Paxton Crawford for example) who have juiced there while David was there at the same time.

I highly doubt you even know who Paxton Craford is.

Ortiz does look a bit bigger.

From the look of him we know he didn't "bulk up" using the waitroom :D

I don't know too many who get bulked up in a waiting room.

You obviously don't know who Paxton Crawford is as he was only on the Sox until 2001 (major league wise, he was in the minors the season after). Ortiz came aboard in 2003.

Glad to know a juicing teammate means other juice as well. Good point though. :lol

As for he 'didn't start jacking until he got to boston' is a baseless statement. He had huge power in the minors. In his 97 minor league season he had 31 HRs. In the 99 season he had 30. He was known as a slugger since he was signed.

I'm glad that you are already talking down to people through < 20 posts with your facts and knowledge. You should make alot of friends here. :thumbup

Just cause someone gets bigger does not imply that they are juicing. This is so ridiculous. People work out and train and naturally get bigger. It's what the human body does. And it's not like Ortiz is Bonds or McGwire big. He's just a big guy.... Give me 5 years and I'll get bigger too.

I'm not talking down to you at all you started it with this:

You have no idea what you are talking about do you?

i don't follow the red sox so i don't know anything about big papi, but i know plenty about baseball

i respect your knowledge of the game and thanks for straightening me out on this subject.

alright?

I'd expect you to stand up for your guy (I see papelbon there)

I guess I'm just jealous that none of my teams have a big basher

And yes, Ortiz is in his prime.

Ok i was wrong ok?

Agreed!

Saying he didn't start juicing till he got to the Majors is not only baseless. It's wrong. His power in the minors was extraordinary for a minor league ballplayer. In 1997, when he went from A to MLB, he had over 30 home runs. He never lost his power anywhere along the way.

Ortiz thrives in pressure situations. I dont really see a relation between that and steroids.

Pujols doesnt even consider himself a HR hitter. He also always has a high average, in nearly every season. He puts the bat on the ball often and therefore puts more home runs in the stands.

Bonds went from around a .280 hitter the first 16 years of his career to hitting well over .300 from ages 37-present.

Check the stats, as usual, you are wrong.

It's amazing to me that Bonds is considered to be having this awful season and he's still got a .900+ OPS. So many players dream of having .900+ OPS in their best years, much less one of their worst, in their 40s, with bad knees.

For the record, I think Bonds did steroids, however, I also feel his unfairly singled out as the primo steroid user. I think baseball should be guilty until proven innocent at this point. I mean, if guys like Jorge Piedra and Alex Sanchez are doing roids, who isn't doing them?

When you quote me, and tell me I'm wrong, and actually provide a link, maybe you should have a look see yourself and actually make sure that what you are telling me I am wrong about, that I am actually wrong about. Because in this instance, you are wrong.

From 1986-2000, ages 21-35, Barry Bonds hit .289/.412/.567

From 2001-2005, ages 36-40, Barry Bonds hit .347/.544/.805

(excluded this year, as ESPN doesnt list HBP or SF on it's stat page, and didn't feel like going through every SF box score to see if someone plunked him in his still growing coconut)
