Apple rules....really

Featured Replies

So I was talking to a friend at FSU and he showed me his new MacBook Pro and how the WiFi at FSU worked in terms of logging in and logging out. I was unsure if my Blueberry iBook G3 300 MHZ/32MB that I got in Fall of 1999 would be able to log on to the FSUWIN and surf the net from campus.

But I decided to give it the old college try anyways and what I got was really surprising. I sit down, turn it on, and it works....I log in and in less than a minute I am surfing the internet using FSU's connection.

So after about 2 weeks of this wonderful surprise, I notice the machine is still keeping a charge of 2-3 hours easily enough. I wondered if a RAM upgrade would be worth it. The machine only had 32MB and worked like it was a laptop from 1999. So after researching my options from Crucial.com, Crucial Memory from FSU, and others....I decide to use RAMDirect.com.

I bought 256MB of RAM for my iBook G3 for $27.50 + shipping. They get it out to me using USPS and I open it, install it, and boot the iBook worried that the firmware may reject it. Nope, the iBook swallowed it up and is now running very quickly. I already have the Airport card, the memory upgrade is in....I'm not touching the 3.2 GB hard drive...so what else can I do to modernize it?

Then it hits me....put Mac OS X on the beast and see if it works. So this is where I am now. I have 8.6, want to put on 10.3 Panther and am looking to see what I will need to get there.

The FSU Computer Store sells Apple and may I say their online store has tremendous discounts for us in software and hardware....as long as it is not Mac Memory.

I'll report back on how I get the beast running OS X and how it works for me.

Might have to get AppleWorks 6 from the FSU Comp. Store though because my AppleWorks 5 may not cut it. Running OpenOffice would be nice too. Microsoft Office is pricy in any form....but the Student & Teacher one is $149....well, that can wait.

I assume and hope you aren't using that computer for much other then word processing and web surfing?

Pretty much....I have the main Dell I use for heavy-duty stuff like photo and video editing.

Not really....the Dell is the main machine while the iBook is for use when around campus in libraries and such where web surfing and word processing are my only needs.

Apple rules? I'm not so sure about that. In 2004, I bought a white iBook G4. Within 1.5 years the hinge which connects the monitor to the machine broke, causing damage to the LCD screen itself. It rendered the computer useless for all intensive purposes. I could connect a monitor and to it and use it as a desktop, but its functionality as a laptop is gone.

Thinking this was a fluke, I bought the black MacBook when it first came out. I've had it for a few months, and am discovering that there is a very big hardware issue. Apparently, because of some design flaw with the logic board, it shuts off by itself for no reason. It could be fully charged or plugged into the wall, yet it still happens. My guess is that either a) it's misreading the core temperature or b) the core temperature is actually too high and the computer shuts down to protect the CPU.

Well I haven't spoke to Apple, but knowing their customer service, it's highly doubtful they'd do anything for me. If they would, I'd have to pay through the nose. I've been in contact with people who have the same problem with their MacBook and have spoken with Apple. They said Apple told them they needed to buy a completely new laptop.

What a joke.

I've had nothing but great things to say about Apple Support.

Give them a call, they may have the tissue to fix your issues.

I've wanted to get an iMac for my apartment since I like it's all-inclusiveness.

However, I can't complain about my laptop.

IBooks blow

Get a Powerbook

Whole new ballgame

Considering they don't make either anymore....I still choose my iBook. :mischief

i had an iBook G4 for about 3 years. the motherboard "failed" 3 times, and the harddrive "failed" once.

i didn't get a warantee when i bought it, because after hearing "oh yeah macs are great they never break" millions of times, you start to not worry about that sh*t.

bad mistake, because i spent as much repairing it as i did for the actual computer itself.

but i must say, when i did work, it was a lot more enjoyable than the windows computer i have now. (on this computer Microsoft Word, iTunes, Reason, and some other programs I can't remember just kinda won't start :confused )

Never buy a Mac Laptop without buying AppleCare.

Mac desktops don't have many issues though.

I spoke with Apple. They're sending me to an Apple store whereupon I will speak to a 'genius' (seriously, is there anything more conceited than calling your tech-support people geniuses?). When I suggested that this was something he should be familiar with, the customer service representative stammered his denial. I understand that he can't admit to knowing about it for risk of culpability, but I hate this is the game Apple that plays.

I bought an iPod when they were first released. There was a glitch with the firewire port in a lot of the first generation iPods. Mine stopped working, and when I spoke to an Apple CSR, they denied knowledge and made me pay $200 for a repair.

I've been an Apple supporter for a long long time, but when you're a customer who loves their product, moreover a customer that frequently supports their product launches, they need to treat you better.

Maybe I'm just stupid for not learning my lesson, but hopefully the 'Genius' will help me and I'll fall in love with Apple all over again.

The reason for sending you to an Apple Store is because from that point they can diagnose and then attempt to correct the issue.

Most of the time they will ship it back to Cupertino and if you have a warranty with a problem serious enough, issue you a new comparable model and transfer over you files.
