ANOTHER school shooting today...

Featured Replies

They got very lucky this time, it could have gotten pretty ugly, the kid obviously didn't have the guts to follow through with his plan.

JOPLIN, Missouri (AP) -- A 13-year-old student fired an AK-47 inside his middle school Monday morning after confronting two others students and his principal, but no one was injured, authorities said.

The student was wearing a mask and pointed the rifle at Principal Steve Gilbreth, Assistant Superintendent Steve Doerr and two students, saying, "not to make me do this," Superintendent Jim Simpson said.

Simpson said the teen then fired a shot into the ceiling, breaking a water pipe, and said again, "Please don't make me do this."

"It was a very close call," Simpson said.

Doerr and Gilbreth persuaded the student to leave the building, where he was confronted by two police officers with weapons drawn. The student dropped the rifle and was taken into custody, Simpson said. The student's identity was not released.

Joplin police Officer Curt Farmer said officers found a note in the student's backpack indicating that he had placed an explosive in the school, which has about 700 students. Students in the school were moved to nearby Joplin Memorial Hall, and the school was closed while officers searched the building.

The student was wearing a mask and apparently had been planning an attack for a "long time," Simpson said. He didn't elaborate and said authorities did not know whether others were involved.

Joplin, which has about 40,900 residents, is in southwest Missouri, on the Kansas border about 140 miles south of Kansas City.

Schools across the country have been on alert after three deadly school shootings in three states in the span of a week, and several schools have been locked down or closed entirely during the past two weeks because of threats.

I always had school on Columbus Day. How the hell did this kid get a damn AK-47? And WHEN are they going to start doing something about this crap? I'm glad I'm not in school anymore.

I got an idea.

Every School should be a Gun Free Zone... Then sh*t like this won't happen.

We could also start by making murder illegal.

Of course i'm being sarcastic... schools are already "Gun Free Zones" yet that doesn't stop the criminals.

I would bring up the peace through superior firearm notion, but that's beyond you, so i'll bring up an argument that's more "touchy feely wholesome." Kids just simply aren't learning that the sh*t they go through in middle/high school ends once you get out into the real world, all that crap that makes you weird, different, or a loser turns into your personality, and makes you unique.

If you really want to solve this problem, take the high school kids on field trips.

Field trips to 20 year high school reunions.

"You kids see that fat slob over there? Captain of the football team."

Who has school on Columbus day?

Everyone not in the northeast.

Columbus Day is a worthless holiday! Yay, some guy gets the credit for discovering a continent 500 years after someone else did FTL.

That kid shouldn't be allowed in schools again. Mandatory home schooling, so if he decides to kill his teachers he's killing his parents.

Shouldn't we be concerned that a child got a hold of an AK 47?!??!

Put this kid's parents in jail forever.

Shouldn't we be concerned that a child got a hold of an AK 47?!??!

What if it's a legal AK-47?

Aside from the AK47, the 'middle school' part is pretty scary as well. They're barely teenagers.

your peace through superior firearm notion is just as rediculous...let me tell you this little bit as a history major and psychology minor and one who has taken many sociology courses as well...baseless violence against a society of victims either A. makes them aggressive back(muslims) B. makes them submissive back(slaves, red sox fans) C. starts a revolution of some sort...and are you trying to say that things that effect our own personal world when we are younger have an effect on us the rest of our life? no way captain obvious...thanks for droppin the knowledge on us...anyways...for me, guns are turning into the alcohol of the early 20th century...im not saying we that we make guns illegal outright...but something more needs to be done, a psychological examine every 3 years to get a license, classes on how to fire and use a gun responsibly, higher taxes to gun owners, higher taxes on bullets...whatever it takes to reduce the violence...this news is getting rediculous, and the longer we sit on our hands, the more innocent people are going to die and the more accord is going to spew nonsense about how bigger and better toys will cause peace...hey, how is that working in iraq?

Who has school on Columbus day?

Nearly everyone not in college :whistle

I'm not in college, and I didn't have school.

Oh well, whatever.

*opens Pandora's box*No box on this one. Either way you spin it, the parents are at big time fault. If you are to be trusted with an AK-47, could you have the decency of hiding it from your kids? No matter what angle this story is taken from, kids shouldn't have guns. No pistols, handguns, shotguns, machine guns, or chain guns. If it fires anything but bbs or paintballs, it shouldn't be in a child's hands.

Lock the parents up.

It doesn't matter if it's a legal weapon or not, it is illegal for a 13 year old to possess a firearm, any firearm. If it was legally owned by his parents who just kept it in a closet or something rather than locked in a secure safe, they'll be held responsible and most likely go to prison, if the kid actually killed someone today his parents would have been charged with involuntary manslaughter and a whole host of other things.

guns

Yes, the gun just walked right into the school on it's own and shot everything up  .

Aren't AK-47s mostly illegal in the US anyway?

No not at all, semi-automatic versions are perfectly legal and no different than a typical hunting rifle at a sporting goods store, they just look "scary" and are used by foreign militaries so people assume things about the weapon which are incredibly far fetched. And i'm willing to bet there is a 99.9999999% chance that this rifle is not even an AK-47, there are literally dozens upon dozens of variants of the AK made by countless companies which are not even real AK's, not to mention the fact that "AK-47" has become almost a general kleenex term for any "scary" looking rifle by the media, like calling every personal watercraft a Jet Ski when that's simply not the case. The media does a terrible job of reporting on weapons that are actually used, unless we see a picture of the actual weapon it will be next to impossible to actually know what it really was because of the media's incredibly horrible record of firearms knowledge and assumptions. Fox News and MSNBC both reported that one of the weapons used in the Colorado shooting a few weeks ago was a "9 gauge assault pistol" which is ridiculous, so many things wrong with that I really have no idea where to even begin.

That is the law and I completely agree, if the parents allowed the weapon to get into the hands of their 13 year old because they neglected to secure it in some way, they'll almost definitely be going to prison. Let's not rule out the fact that the kid could be a gang member or something along those lines and got it through illegal channels though, because rifles like the SKS and whatnot are literally a dime a dozen and can be purchased easily for under $100, and the parents could be totally anti-gun for all we know.

The worst part about this is that the little punks record is going to wiped clean when he turns 18 which is disgusting, if you commit a heinous crime like this, even at a young age, you've got to be one f***ed up person and it shouldn't just disappear because you reach the magical age of 18.

see...this part of the argument i dont get...someone is sane as can be...and then all of a sudden, when they have a gun in their hands they become nuts...hmmm...ie..my point is...its like giving viagra to ron jeremy, or donuts to chris farley, or crack cocaine to richard pryor...guns are an addiction in this country and it has to stop...if it doesnt...accord's solution is going to happen in that everyone will have and use guns needlessly...the murder rate in this country will go higher than its rate of of obese people

i think all the media attention these things get gives other phycos ideas...i know these stories deserve attention but maybe if tehy werent so publicized, then phycos wouldnt think oh well that will end all my probs....

Jimmy, quit being an idiot. Normal people do not just pick up a gun and go psycho and the article clearly states he was "planning the attack for a long time." Your problem is that every post comes straight out of your ass with not even the smallest ounce of common sense or logic, you ignore all previously mentioned facts and do not even bother to read the article or post you're actually responding to.

Law abiding citizens do not murder people and do not commit crimes, why is this so god damn difficult for you to comprehend? What is the matter with you? I'm not being sarcastic here, I am genuinely interested in what is seriously wrong with you.

You keep bringing up that you've got a degree in history as if that's supposed to give you some sort of credibility on the subject, that says a lot about the current state of the American university system. I'm curious as to where you "earned" your degree - Big Bird State College?

Do you ever wonder why 99% of the time people don't even bother replying to your posts? I'll give you a hint: it's not because you make good points. The only time people ever respond to you or acknowledge your involvement in a thread is when you say something that is so batshit crazy, so off the wall that calling you out on it is irresistable. Even the people who are completely against me on this forum think you and your posts are absolutely ridiculous.

Get a clue, Jimmy.
