Sosa eyes to return to big leagues, 600 HRs

Associated Press

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Sammy Sosa, 12 home runs shy of 600, said he wants to return to the big leagues in 2007 after taking a year off and contemplating retirement.

"I feel good physically, and after a year of resting we are optimistic about making a decision soon about returning to baseball," the Dominican slugger told The Associated Press on Saturday.

Sosa, 37, did not play in 2006 after rejecting a non-guaranteed offer of $500,000 from the Washington Nationals. But the outfielder, perhaps best known for his epic home run duel with Mark McGwire in 1998, said he is motivated to return.

"I still have a lot of passion for the game and I'm in shape. I want to get to 600 home runs before saying goodbye," said Sosa.

His agent, Adam Katz, has previously said Sosa probably was headed to retirement.

Sosa, whose last season with the Baltimore Orioles ended with a .221 batting average and 14 home runs, said several teams have shown interest but did not specify which ones.

The only player in major league history to have three seasons of at least 60 homers, Sosa testified before a congressional committee looking into steroids use by professional baseball players.

In similar news, Benito Santiago is returning from retirement and will be playing in Puerto Rico's Winter League with the Leones de Ponce (Ponce Lions)....THAT is bizarre...don't know if this had been posted before.

who's going to be the first one to suggest the marlins sign sosa?

If that's true, wow. He was a NL MVP candidate during 2003 but I can't see him making a successful comeback.

somehow, it will probably be the Giants who sign him

Hey, he was basically out of baseball the last time the Giants signed him, and it revived his career...no way it would happen again, considering he's now a 41 year old catcher

lol..no I don't want him...I think he's a total idiot and is on roids.

The MLB is no longer a place for roided up homerun hitters. It was nice what him and McGuire did in 1998, but its time to move on.

41? Isn't that too young for someone to sign with the Giants?

Yeah hopefully he doesn't get cut by the team that actually signs him to their minor leagues, and ends up becoming a pitcher for a different league :shifty .....

Think the White SOX are looking to sign another ex slugger? I hope Sosa doesn't have to end up writing a book called CORKED.
