November 14, 200619 yr NEW YORK ? (AP) ? Orlando Hernandez stayed with the New York Mets, agreeing to $12 million, two-year contract on Tuesday. El Duque, acquired by the Mets from Arizona in May, went 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts for New York. He was in line to start the team's playoff opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers before injuring his calf while jogging in the outfield. Hernandez missed the division series and the National League Championship Series but appeared ready to return for the World Series had the Mets advanced that far. New York lost the NLCS to St. Louis in seven games. El Duque, who turned 41 last month, has an 81-60 career record with a 4.19 ERA in eight major league seasons with the Yankees, Chicago White Sox and Diamondbacks since leaving Cuba. New York already knows it will be without Pedro Martinez for the first half of next season. The three-time Cy Young Award winner is recovering from shoulder surgery. The Mets hope to re-sign Tom Glavine, who hasn't decided whether to stay or try to return to Atlanta, his team from 1987-2002.
November 15, 200619 yr uuuh...i can't even imagine what Zito is going to get if El Duque is getting 6 mil per year
November 15, 200619 yr uuuh...i can't even imagine what Zito is going to get if El Duque is getting 6 mil per year He's getting at least Kevin Brown money. If it costs just $40 million to negotiate a 5 year deal with a picher and $12 million for a barely effective 50 year old...wow.
November 15, 200619 yr Jeez with all the money the mets have, you wonder how it's possible that they wern't competitive from 01-04 :mischief2
November 15, 200619 yr More like, that is how the market is. When Vicente Padilla is asking for/will be getting 10 million, 6 million for El Duque is nothing especially when you have the Mets payroll.
November 15, 200619 yr 6 mill in the New York market transaltes itself into maybe 4.5-4.8, he would have never gotten that kind of money elsewhere.
