November 28, 200619 yr Cards ink Kennedy, Wells, two others Catcher Bennett returns; Marrero agrees to Minor League deal By Matthew Leach / MLB.com ST. LOUIS -- The past two years, David Eckstein has spent Spring Training getting to know a new double-play partner. This time around, the get-acquainted period should take about long enough for a handshake and a friendly hug. Adam Kennedy signed a three-year deal on Tuesday to play second base for St. Louis, reuniting him with Eckstein, his old Anaheim teammate. The 30-year-old keystone minder spent the past seven seasons as an Angel, four of those with Eckstein as the man to his right. The Cardinals also filled another of the openings on their roster on Tuesday, signing right-hander Kip Wells to take one of the vacant spots in their starting rotation. Wells, 29, was most recently a Texas Ranger but is best known to the Cardinals from four-plus years pitching for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Additionally, Gary Bennett re-upped for another year backing up Yadier Molina behind the plate, and former Cardinal Eli Marrero agreed to a Minor League deal. Marrero, who came up as a catcher, has been a utility man in recent years. http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/NASApp/ml...sp&c_id=stl Decent moves IMO!
November 28, 200619 yr bennett is one of the worst backup Cs in the league, but the other 2 signings are nice with Wells being the best. He's got the upside of some of these Eaton/Wolf types but only cost 4MM.
November 28, 200619 yr Author bennett is one of the worst backup Cs in the league, I know you think Im kidding but he was valuable for us this past year!
November 28, 200619 yr Always good to have a familiar DP combo up the middle, and the Wells signing is great. My favorite of the offseason so far.
November 28, 200619 yr I have always been a fan of Kip Wells as a back end of the rotation guy so thats good news good deals

Not about to argue there but he called good games when he caught IMO
November 29, 200619 yr Kip Wells and Adam Kennedy will do very well in St Louis. It just seems LaRussa has that effect on players. He tends to bring out the best in them. Great pickup to get ready to defend their championship
