Junior
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6246902 No word yet on who the Sox got. Sox get Gavin Floyd and Gio Gonzalez.
PBCMarlinsFan
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6246902 No word yet on who the Sox got. Bleh. I guess that means there may be some reason to believe the rumour of Lieber going to the Brewers for Mench and Turnbow. Depending on who the Phillies gave up in this Garcia trade, Gillick might be pulling off some major coups here.
Eddie Altamonte
Phillies acquire Garcia from White Sox Story Tools: Print Email Blog This Subscribe Ken Rosenthal / FOXSports.com Posted: 3 minutes ago In the first major trade of the winter meetings, the Phillies acquire right hander Freddy Garcia from the White Sox in exchange for right-hander Gavin Floyd and minor-league left-hander Gio Gonzalez, FOXSports.com has learned. Garcia pitched 216 1/3 innings in 2006, earning a 17-9 record with a 4.53 ERA. In 2005, Garcia won 14 games and won a game in the World Series as the White Sox won their first title since 1917. Over his eight-year career, Garcia is 116-71 with a 4.01 ERA. The deal reconnects Garcia with his former general manager from Seattle, Pat Gillick, who has been working to upgrade the team's pitching staff. Gillick had also been looking for a right-handed bat to protect NL MVP Ryan Howard, but said he didn't expect to find one and turned his attention to the pitching staff. "The Chicago White Sox are still open for business," Williams said. Floyd was 4-3 with a 7.29 ERA in 11 starts for the Phillies last season before being optioned to Triple-A on June 3. "I think Gavin's going to be a little bit of a late bloomer," Phillies assistant GM Mike Arbuckle said. Gonzalez was traded from the White Sox to Phillies in November 2005 as part of the deal that sent Jim Thome to Chicago and Aaron Rowand to Philadelphia

I don't like this trade at all. The Phillies came out on top on this one and their rotation now looks to be close behind ours for tops in the NL East. We also managed to keep Rowand as well, who the Sox have coveted since they traded him. We have a huge amount of young pitchers in the minors, and Gio appeared to have had the worst ERA of all of them, but that isn't saying much cause it's the minors. The biggest part of the trade was that we got the SP we needed, and still kept a decent centerfielder.
Junior
Nothing like a $12 million dollar pitcher with a 5 ERA.
PBCMarlinsFan
Nothing like a $12 million dollar pitcher with a 5 ERA. Where does the 5 ERA come from? While last season was subpar careerwise (hopefully that trend continues), he has posted sub-1.30 WHIP the last 4 seasons in the AL with 14 plus wins in 5 of his 8 seasons in the bigs. I do like the high number of HR he has gives up and the hits per 9 innings, but the Phillies just picked up a mid-rotation innings eater who is a substantial upgrade over what they did have. This is a better deal than the Eaton signing my a longshot.

But also consider 2007 will be a contract year, so you know he is going to be leaving it all out on the field. I prefer trashing Phillies trades, not hyping them, so I will stop now. Edit: One thing I will add is that if the Phillies do not re-sign him after next season, they will end up the losers in this trade. I just don't like how this leaves the Marlins outlook in 2007. The_Punisher
isn't Gio Gonzalez some kid that got drafted from Florida? I remember talking to his cousin once. Seems like he's been bounced around a few, can I get some info from an expert on this guy?

As far as Gio Gonzalez goes Zo, he is a local (from Hialeah) LHP and his ceiling seems to be as a 2/3 SP, but he probably won't be MLB ready till 2009 (late 2008 at the earliest). beautox
I like this deal alot for the ChiSox me too, i'm glad to have the 10mil to spend on a back up catcher or some other moves KW has up his sleeve and if just one of Floyd or Gio turn out to be ML average starters the sox win. Cooper has a propensity of fixing power arms(thornton, jenks, macdougal) i think Aardsma and Floyd will be some of his best work yet. Also Gio is alot like Danks(TX) and hes just 20yrs old at AA. I think reuniting with JR Perdew will go a long way in getting his control back. I'd say a fair deal overall for both teams with the upside going to the sox. MrAndMrsFish
I like this deal alot for the ChiSox Ramp...im in total agreement...i think the ChiSox got a big STEAL here isn't Gio Gonzalez some kid that got drafted from Florida? I remember talking to his cousin once. Seems like he's been bounced around a few, can I get some info from an expert on this guy? Gio was drafted out of Miami Pace High about 3 years ago and this is the second time he was traded...he was sent from the White Sox to the Phillies in the Thome swap and now he goes back to this original team....he is still a real young kid and struggled a lil bit in the Arizona Fall League....but he will end up being a nice 3/4 in the bigs when he gets some seasoning
