His winter league numbers are great, but I do not take them too seriously. Just like I do not take ST numbers too seriously. While both can be indicators of a players skills, I want to see progression of a major league professional over the course of his career in the minors and/or in the bigs. And when I look at Sanchez's performance there I am unimpressed. Or do you seriously suggest that his performance in a Latin winter league should be given more weight than what he has done in MLB and the minors over the course of his career?

With the list you give, I am a convert of the much touted on this board (though untested in the field) Cofredo Amezachard platoon (if a better option is not present, and it isn't). I'd like to see that given a chance in 2007 before Sanchez, any day of the week.

Are you serious? Or have you just simply not looked at his MLB numbers? The guy had one ugly stretch when he played in the minors last season. If you look at his entire MLB career, you see a 290 AVG (without any ugly splits requiring a platoon) with a career OPS of around 703, which, while not staggering, is still better than any in house options we have. And if you want progression, just look at his stats season to season while he was in the bigs. Over the time he played his last two major league seasons (04-05, so that should count for consisitency) his AVG was more than 30 points up his career #s at 324 while his OPS was about 50 points higher in that span as well.

I'm not trying to sell the guy based on his LVBP numbers. The fact of the matter is that his MLB offensive numbers are better than every other CF candidate we have, and in most cases it's not even close. I only look at the LVBP #s to demonstrate that he's gotten out of whatever funk he was in while in the minors last year. If you look at his career #s over the past 3 or 4 years, that stretch sticks out as way below his usual performance at any level, and as more of a prolonged slump than a real indicator of his abilities.

Most people forgeting that he can run! Hopefully Fredi will run often and take advantage of his youth!

First, he is 29, not exactly ancient but not 22 either

second, he is not a very good base stealer(122/58)(67%)

Sanchez will provide an empty 300avg with the worst CF defense in MLB...nearly the equivalent of Alfredo but probably worse.

He won't hit anywhere near .300.

Yeah, because his career B/A is no where near 300???? How can you make that statement when the one thing he has proven is that he can hit for a decent average at the MLB level ? Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying he will hit for a high batting average, or even make the team for that matter. I'm just curious how people on this board write people of so easily. Not just Alex Sanchez but others such as Olivo, or Borchard, or Ross. We have to make due with what we have and these guys are all major league caliber players. They're not all stars or even very good, but major leaguers none the less. Like I said, I have no opinion either way on this player. It just find it amusing how people state their opinons as fact.
