The President plans to make a primetime speech tonight at 9 PM EST, where he will announce a new plan for extending U.S. troop deployments.

This plan may turn out to be the final blow in our operations in Iraq. The Sunnis believe that this new plan may kill a lot of their group, and support the Shi'ite majority that has dominated the country's politics since the new government formed. Most Democrats and many Republicans are opposing this new plan to send in troops, along with the members of the Iraq Study Group and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Polls also show that the general public does not support this plan either.

It's looking like Bush and the White House may very well be alone in their new plan to increase troops by around 21,000 in Iraq.

The Democratic majority is considering the possibility in some circles of cutting war funding to prevent the President from escalating the war.

I find way too many parallels between the Nixonian escalation of the Vietnam war into Laos and Cambodia, and the current situation that we face in the Middle East.

Our relations with Saudi Arabia and other Sunni countries in the region may suffer under this plan, although it is not yet certain.

The Iraqi Prime Minister has reportedly relented in allowing U.S. troops to go after the Mahdi Army, Moqtada al Sadr's personal Shia militia. That's about the only good sign that I see here in this whole thing.

i think id rather have a 4 year old tell me this kind of news...at least i could comprehend what the 4 year old is saying

My contract with the US Army was supposed to end before I'd deploy to Iraq, it was involuntarily extended, and I went. I was supposed to be deployed "not more than 364 days," which somehow mutated into nearly 14 months. The Bush administration has been up to this crap for years already. I hate those morons.

Shouldn't the poll wait until we have a transcript of the speech posted?

I don't care what he says, sending more troops is dumb and I really hope the Democrats pull the entire funding for the war. The public obviously doesn't think that people who go against the war are anti-American, so it's about time Congress or SCOTUS stood up to the White House. And since the Supreme Court doesn't have anything on their plate now anyways (and it's not like they're really having a great stretch recently), Congress needs to step up to bat.

Come on Congress, make America proud and make sure people's opinions actually matter.

america's opinion on war hasnt counted with the goverment in decades...why should it start now?

Looks like he just put the ball in Maliki's court. If the Iraqis don't have this problem off our TV screens in 6 months, they are going to lose the White House.

morons? I'm sorry but you signed up to be in the army. With all due respect, you should know what that means and better yet you should want to defend your country. That is why they pay you. :mischief

He did defend his country. For 56 more days than the terms of his contract called for. Can you imagine what it must be like to be in a combat zone for 420 days? To work doubletime, piggybacking shifts in the desert, because there aren't enough troops deployed to satisfy the workload? As far as I'm concerned there is no one more qualified to attest to how this administration bungled the war than someone who was actually there.

The Supreme Court is powerless to do anything. This is a "Political Issue" (an issue that's in the hands of the Executive and Legistlative branches and that goes beyond the authority of the Judiciary).

I would like to see Congress pull funding, or at least deny the President the funding to continue this war the way he wants.

Oh, you just meant the White House in general. I gotcha.

Don't put words in my mouth. I'm very happy to have served, and proud to have been one of the select few members of the military (over the course of time) who have actually had a chance to do their job in a real world situation. My loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage have absolutely nothing to do with the mental abilities of the men and women of our national government.

That is political suicide it would be twisted and turned by the republicans about not supporting the troops.

Even though Bush really didnt come across too good in the speach.

I would like to see Congress pull funding, or at least deny the President the funding to continue this war the way he wants.

And in 2008, the Democrats could hand the Congress back, and not even be able to fillibuster.

It's not a guarantee that the public would go against ending this war. They did vote out anyone in favor of the war...

Except for all the pro-war congressman and senators that were reelected. If the Democrats pull funding from men in combat, they cannot make that work for them at all. If Bush fails with this plan, they stand to gain, if Bush succeeds, they can spin it as them forcing him into changing tactics.

give him 6 months after all this war isnt about terrorism or weapons of mass destruction or civil war....its about OIL....if we pull out now Iran takes over Iraq gets control of the oil and then our economy is screwed....after all the troops arent thier to protect US freedom yadayada....they are really there to keep this 13.7 trillion dollar economy from crumbling....look at the big picture guys....we dont want another Jimmy Carter situation here....after all the economy is better than it ever has been in our nations history....

man if Accord could see me now... :whistle

This should not be about spinning. The Democrats should say what they believe is true (that we lost the war, period) and that we need to withdraw in an orderly fashion. If we lost the war, what's the point in doing all of this political gamesmanship? People's lives are at stake here.

Now, I am not sure that we have lost the war yet. We are definitely losing, but perhaps there is an opportunity to turn things around if we do things honestly and competently, which means start being pragmatic and stop being so damn ideological. Conceptually I am in favor of one last try, but this war has been run so incompetently that I am not sure I can give President Bush the benefit of the doubt. The administration is simply far too incompetent.

The things that he is proposing now were the kinds of things that needed to be done from the beginning, nearly 4 years ago.
