Padres left-hander David Wells has Type 2 diabetes, which the team says is controllable.

"It's something he'll have to manage and something we'll have to help him manage," chief executive officer Sandy Alderson said Monday. "It's not unprecedented by any means."

Wells was diagnosed two weeks ago, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported in Monday's editions.

Asked if he feels less energy at times, Wells said: "It depends." He declined further comment on Monday.

Manager Bud Black said Wells needs to meet with doctors.

"From what I've been told, it'll be manageable," Black said.

The 43-year-old old signed a one-year contract in January to return to his hometown Padres as the No. 5 starter. The 6-foot-3, 248-pound Wells has often battled his weight, and was scratched from a start late last season due to gout in his right foot.

He shouldn't be such a fat slob and try laying off the fried chocolate once in awhile.

It's not hard to control type 2 diabetes.

My father has Type 2 diabetes and he was never a "fat slob". Sure, Wells isn't a very thin guy. But that still doesn't make it a cool thing to say about a person.

I'd say about 90% of type 2 diabetes is caused by being fat and out of shape. I'd also say a high% of it can be treated by just simply changing your diet and the way you eat. When you look at David Wells and his past, I don't think it's rude to call him a fat slob, I'd bet that he would call himself that!

I agree, but it's the way you came across. I can't stand Wells either. But it's like you're saying, "Hahaha! You deserve it!" Diabetes is not fun. I know the complications that can occur. Maybe I am just more sensitive about this subject than other people may be. I just don't think it's nice to say a person deserves a disease like that.

whats the avg number of years diabetes takes off a person's life....10yrs???

he definitely lives it up tho

Type 2 diabetes is far and away the disease that is almost always the fault of the contractor. Not to say there aren't isolated cases, but 9 out of 10 times, if you contract type 2 diabetes, you did something to put yourself at risk, and by risk I don't mean get malaria in Africa risk I mean 6 or 7 cokes a day risk.
