Posted March 21, 200718 yr On Mike and Mike this morning, Stark listed a bunch of trade rumors, but dismissed them as not very likely. He then mentioned Jorge Julio for Petit is the only trade that seems "hot" or mostly likely.
March 21, 200718 yr Considering the money, the situation of our 'pen/rotation this spring, and the fact that Petit is still in the mix for the 5 spot, I'd say it's the least likely.
March 21, 200718 yr What a horrible trade that would be. I'm sure this doesn't interest you, but I like to follow the history of trades a little: Yusmeiro Petit and Mike Jacobs for Carlos Delgado and cash Jorge Julio and John Maine for Kris Benson Jorge Julio for El Duque Jorge Julio for Yusmeiro Petit Marlins would have received Jorge Julio and Mike Jacobs Mets get Carlos Delgado, John Maine, and Orlando Hernandez Arizona gets Yusmeiro Petit Orioles get Kris Benson
March 21, 200718 yr Marlins would have received Jorge Julio and Mike Jacobs Mets get Carlos Delgado, John Maine, and Orlando Hernandez Arizona gets Yusmeiro Petit Orioles get Kris Benson Kind of unfair because the Marlins shed a lot of salary in the process which has to count for something. Also, Grant Psomas is pissed off somewhere.
March 21, 200718 yr Forgot about Psomas, but I listed it under the assumption salary was transferred over to the new team unless otherwise mentioned.

March 21, 200718 yr I'm still going with my fantasy trade (and yeah that's why I used the word "fantasy") which is Petit and a prospect to Arizona, for Julio and cash that goes to the Giants for Benetiz and cash (read big chunk of Benitez' salary paid by Giants) back to the Marlins. Arizona gets Petit and another pitching prospect, Giants get rid of Benitez and replaces him with Julio as a backup closer to Brian Wilson and if Wilson works out then Julio sets up. Marlins get the guy they want with big name recognition in SoFla in Benitez who even if he only closes thirty games this season provides a good foundation for a young staff. It's a win-win-win.
March 21, 200718 yr This would be a god awful trade if it happens. Among the worst in the franchise's history. Why? Is this because of your other-worldly closer theory?
March 21, 200718 yr Well that and Julio is terrible Maybe didn't pose it properly, but Julio, who there's been about dozen reports saying the Giants are interested in goes to San Fran NOT here. It's just the initial step in a three-way trade.
March 21, 200718 yr You forgot the best part of the deal.....Gaby Hernandez Just because you have 4,000 posts doesn't mean you know everything about baseball Mr. 4000 Post Man.

March 21, 200718 yr This would be a god awful trade if it happens. Among the worst in the franchise's history. Why? Is this because of your other-worldly closer theory? Don't be silly 2003. Don't you know that he knows more about the the 9th inning (and baseball for that matter) than the thousands of managers who have roamed the dugouts in MLB for over a 100 years? He is beyond revolutionary. They're still working on a name for him at Webster's.

March 21, 200718 yr I half agree with him...until he says that random minor league arms from our system could've reproduced Borowski's 2006

I disagree with his closer theory (albeit slightly) and I still agree with him that this would be a reaming of a trade if it's just Julio for Petit and see ya at the ballpark. All things considered (money, situation of team in bullpen/rotation, talent going/coming) this would rival the Castillo trade as the most one sided Beinfest move in the not so distant past.
March 21, 200718 yr his idea/theory might be odd and different, but it doesn't mean he is wrong You'll of course note I never said it was wrong.
March 21, 200718 yr I dont know. there's plenty to suggest petit will never be a major league arm. Even so, his trade value is better than that of a crappy former closer who's always one homer away from a nervous breakdown.
March 21, 200718 yr in some circles. it's very easy to overrate prospects especially after the unprecedented success we had with rookies last season. In general a larger number of these guys will fail than succeed.
March 21, 200718 yr I dont know. there's plenty to suggest petit will never be a major league arm. He'll make for a decent setup guy if he isn't dealt. I just don't see why we want to go after an old washed up closer just because he has experience closing games when we have three or four young guys who can throw just as hard as him. In that regard, I agree with penguino's closer theory. Going after a guy just because he's somewhat proven he can consistently pitch single innings when we have bigger fish to fry is ridiculous. Not to mention what it will cost us.
