De Aza and Gall may make OD roster

Yeah, nm... guess there's no one else who can play 2B/SS.

I just hope we aren't resorting to using Amezaga in the outfield again this year.

It has been reported that we're in trade talks with the Rockies for Clint Barmes

MARLINS

Hopefuls don't sweat roster cuts

By Juan C. Rodriguez

South Florida Sun-Sentinel

March 26, 2007

JUPITER ? Asked to what degree he's tried to put together the 25-man roster puzzle, outfielder John Gall made a timely analogy.

"It's like trying to figure out the NCAA basketball pool," he said. "It's a difficult thing to do, so you're better off just watching it and enjoying the games. I'm here, so I'm better off just preparing myself for the season and giving myself the best shot."

Gall and his fellow non-roster invitees open the week knowing any day could be their last in big-league camp. With the season opener a week away, the Marlins will trim down to 25 within the next few days.

The Marlins have 40 players remaining in camp. Five are hurt and will start the season in extended spring training or on the disabled list. That leaves 10 cuts before 25-man rosters must be submitted Sunday.

The Marlins will carry 13 position players and 11 of those spots are all but taken. The last two will go to the starting center fielder and extra outfielder the Marlins will need while Jeremy Hermida recovers from a bone bruise in his right knee.

Hermida's injury potentially opens up a spot for Gall, but it doesn't help non-roster infielder Jason Wood. Wood, 37, can play all four infield spots and is hitting .400 this spring.

No question he's played well enough to make the big-league club. Yet what happens between the lines only represents a fraction of the equation. Aaron Boone can play first and third and has a guaranteed major league contract. Alfredo Amezaga is a capable middle infielder. His $380,000 salary isn't guaranteed, but are the Marlins prepared to demote the switch-hitting Amezaga for Wood?

Making a good spring impression can facilitate an early promotion if the need arises. That's of little consolation to guys like Wood and Gall.

"I've never really had to worry about a decision like that to where I've put up numbers and not made the team," Wood said. "In the past there really wasn't an opportunity. With the way things have gone this spring, the numbers have been there and I've shown I could play everywhere positionwise."

Added Gall: "That continuity of starting with the team is where everybody in this clubhouse wants to be. Then you feel like you're one of the core guys. That's what I'm shooting for."

Gall appeared in a combined 30 games for the Cardinals in 2005-06. He didn't break camp with them either season. Wood made the 1998 Oakland A's out of spring training. The next year he was on a big-league deal with the Tigers, but was hurt and missed the season's first six weeks.

"I'm not going to lie," Wood said. "You sit and look around here and think what could happen, what would happen. It's just a matter of who's pulling for you, who needs you, what they need and things like that. The numbers have been there. I've made their decision pretty tough, I would imagine."

Manager Fredi Gonzalez agreed, adding Gall is making a compelling bid as well: "They both give you quality at-bats, professional at-bats. Makeupwise, they're outstanding."
