March 29, 200719 yr Didn't Jacobs have close to the lowest OPS of all ML 1B? Yes, only one to finish below .800 that was a regular. And also the only player in either league to be bottom 5 in both OPS and fielding percentage. Statistically, you can make the case he is the worst regular 1st baseman in baseball.

He was a rookie and played injured much of the year. Statistically, if Miggy had played a full season in 2003 he might have been bottom 5 in OPS among third basemen. Of course, I am not comparing Jacobs to Miggy, but you have to realize that it's actually the norm for rookies to struggle. He'll get better.
March 29, 200719 yr Methinks we were spoiled by Hanley, Uggla and the pitching crew. Those numbers would net him Top 3 ROY most other years. Count me in the group that believes players get better.
March 29, 200719 yr yes, Jacobs was better last year vs righties. I still want Hammer batting behind Cabrera. stats don't always say the whole story what's the rest of the story The rest of the story... Just because Jacobs out OPSed Hammer vs RHP last by year (by .085) doesn't mean he'll do it again this year. I expect Hammer to improve this year but can't say the same thing about Jacobs. I think Hammer's hand injury was the cause for his slump last May and June. I don't think Jacobs' slumps were necessarily injury related. I think the .085 gap will be closed significantly and if the gap is negligible then it makes sense to keep Hammer 4th vs RHP just because he'll out OPS him by a mile vs LHP.
March 29, 200719 yr What makes you think Jacobs won't also improve? I love how people make assertions based on gut instincts alone. So you like Hammer. Great. So do I. But I also think Jacobs is capable of improving quite a bit. I look for him to put up: .275/.340/.480.
March 29, 200719 yr The absence of the whole truth is not telling the truth. Half-truths are almost always closer to lies than the truth.

I just don't expect or predict that he will because as I said before I don't think his slumps were injury related. BTW, the .820 OPS you look for out of Jacobs is pretty crappy for a 1B. And yes, I like Hammer a lot. In fact I like him a lot more than Jacobs because I think Hammer will be a better player.

Why do you think his slumps were not injury related? The FO seems to think so. I'd like to see what kind of insight you have besides just having an opinion because they're like a**holes and everyone has one. I have his OPS low because of his low OBP. His slugging at .480 is decent. That's 25 jacks in a full season. I'll be happy with that. Remember, we don't need Jacobs to OPS .900 We've got Miggy to do that (he'll actually OPS about 1.000). Just knock in some runs and hit some jacks and we're okay.
March 29, 200719 yr i believe jacobs will be one of the better 1st baseman in the league this year...but that would still put him 3rd best in the division

Hammer is my favorite baseball player in MLB...this decision is purely on whta happened last season vs RHP and LHP. If it turns out differently then they'll make the adjustment. In the meantime the right decision is being made.

His slupm was wrapped around the DL stint and from what I remenber the hand bothered him before and after going on the DL.

March 29, 200719 yr I give him some of the benefit of the doubt because he was injured, but the "he's just a rookie" argument isn't quite as convincing. Jacobs will be 27 this year and he was being put to shame offensively by some of our own players and other young 1B such as Fielder. He needs to turn this around soon. And it wasn't just his OBP that lowered his OPS either. How are his numbers after taking DS into account? Especially for a left handed hitter.
March 29, 200719 yr Accounting for park affects his 798OPS ranks as a slightly above average 1B. (OPS+ 106 where 100 is average). DS ranks as one of the toughest parks for a lefty to hit for power.

March 29, 200719 yr These are the OPS+ of the guy who played the most games @ 1B for each NL team: Delgado - 134 Howard - 170 LaRoche - 133 Johnson - 146 Jacobs - 106 Pujols - 180 Berkman - 161 Hatteberg - 106 Fielder - 111 Casey - 102 DLee - 111 Gonzalez - 125 Garciaparra - 120 Hillenbrand - 74 Jackson - 101 Helton - 119

Dude, the 100 refers to the average of all all players... not the average of all 1B. There's a difference, dude.

He'll have to tell us, dude.
