May 4, 200719 yr In the Head to Head Vote, choose the candidate that you would vote for in that situation.
May 4, 200719 yr Fred Thompson is the best candidate. I don't see myself voting if Giuliani or McCain win the nomination (I won't vote for a president as old as McCain) unless Hillary got the democratic nom. I went with Joe Biden on the dem side because I like how he speaks his mind and I agree with him on a few things.
May 4, 200719 yr Author Interesting results so far, although not too surprising. Clearly this board dislikes Hillary (I'm among them).
May 4, 200719 yr Fred Thompson is the best candidate. Just out of curiosity Fox, is there anything in particular you like that Thompson has accomplished in the past or that he stands for? Or is it more a matter of the rest of the field being weak? In his time in the Senate I can't recall much that Thompson was really known for... and it's too early for this poll. I haven't even heard half these people speak yet.
May 4, 200719 yr Author and it's too early for this poll. I haven't even heard half these people speak yet. Well, I wouldn't have posted this if not for the two debates in a week that have happened. I agree it's too early, but I'm certainly eager to see Bush's replacement.

Or is it more a matter of the rest of the field being weak? In his time in the Senate I can't recall much that Thompson was really known for... He's real. His campaign is going to be what he believes and feels, not constructed to get him elected or to win. He's going to be the politically agressive conservative that I thought George W. Bush was going to be when I voted for him but hasn't been for years (Where's that social security reform, Dubya?). I like his background, how he came from behind and beat heavily favored Democrat Jim Cooper for Al Gore's empty senate seat. I like what he did with that senate seat: oppozing the feseralization of state's issues, he has been on committee's looking for political corruption, he wants to downsize the government because he realizes large government doesn't handle large projects well at all. I like what he is saying now: he believes the millitary has been stretched too thin, he does not support public funding of abortions and believes abortion is a state's right issue and even though he doesn't support abortion, he doesn't support a human life ammendment. He thinks the nation should be tolerant towards gays and that civil unions are a state's issue. He is an amazing orator and communicator, something that has hurt Bush so much in defending his actions and standing firm. Reagan stood firm and had a backbone, Thompson is in that same vein. He is a man who stands for what he believes (conviction would be a novel concept in Washington right now) in and isn't going to bulls*** around. He is the perfect candidate for my conservative views and none of the other candidates come close.
May 5, 200719 yr Fred Thompson is going to know where to stand, what to say, when to say it, and how to say it. He will not mangle words. He will not go off message. He has legitimate conservative credentials. He will be compared with Reagan all day, every single day. People will feel that they already know him. Hollywood people will campaign for him, which will raise him an ass-ton of money. He is not known for anything in the Senate, which is a good thing, no baggage. The last season of Law and Order he films will be on for most of the year while he is running. That is why he is the best candidate. Unless the Dems wise up and nominate Richardson, he's the guy to beat.
May 6, 200719 yr I'm curious as to why you think Richardson is the Dem's best candidate. I've put a case in other threads but: He's a Governor. (always a plus) He's from a region that is strong for the opposition (another plus) He will win his home state and a couple of bordering states (enough to win with just that and Kerry states) He has no baggage. He was tapped by the Republican President of the United States to lead a delegation to North Korea (one of the biggest headaches) He's hispanic... but doesn't have a hispanic name

May 7, 200719 yr The big thing between Thompson and Obama is that Thompson can keep every Bush 2004 state and threaten MN, NH and WI regardless of the opposition and that Obama will only realistically threaten to take away MO and would put MN, NH, and WI at risk. Richardson can take away NM, AZ, and CO, and will not fare any worse then Kerry in the other battleground states.
May 8, 200719 yr I am not liberal but if i were a betting man i would bet on the democratic candidate without even knowing who it is because all of the political trends are heading that direction . The republican party is a party of waring factions i dont think even a Hilary nomination can unite the party there are simply too many issues the Bush presidency has brought to the surface that cant easily be resolved and the Bush presidency as turned off virtually all independent and swing voters . Only Thompson do i give a reasonable chance , McCain a slight chance , everyone else no chance
May 8, 200719 yr I watched Thompson make a speech at the Lincoln Club in Orange County and didn't really come away all that impressed. He's got the voice, but I didn't hear anything particularly inspiring or that would make me want to run out and get behind him. He's sort of lifeless up there, no energy. And while it wasn't technically a campaign speech, let's be honest - if he's planning on running, everything at this point is a campaign speech. He had national print media there too, not to mention CSPAN televising it. Giuliani at times looks like he doesn't even want to be in this race. You have to wonder where McCain would be polling right now had he stuck to his "maverick" act. As for the Thompson - Reagan comparisons, I don't see it. He reminds me more of Dick Cheney, with less asshole factor.
