Posted June 16, 200717 yr Along with other budget cuts. Thankfully my son is in his last year there. Link
June 17, 200717 yr Thank goodness I'm in a private school...they steal 40 grand from me every year, but they make sure this never happens!
June 17, 200717 yr Author Thank goodness I'm in a private school...they steal 40 grand from me every year, but they make sure this never happens! Wow, 40 grand a year, I hope you're on scholarships.
June 17, 200717 yr Author Hooray for TK.....but how are we going to get new Freshman this way? It will certainly put a bigger burden on the other Universities. Unless they follow suit.
June 17, 200717 yr Why Rolling admission and early action is a joke. They shut out plenty of better students once they meet their quota's and severly hamper themselves of any flexibility. Well in the case of FSU, I assume it's not going to hurt the best students who are probably going to Florida(I assume) but still this still will suck for some kids who are plenty bright.
June 17, 200717 yr it's a political statement. they want this tuition hike bulls*** to eventually pass.
June 17, 200717 yr it's a political statement. they want this tuition hike bulls*** to eventually pass. But all the schools should do it at the same time. Not just 2 or 3. Every school needs to set out on a path for growth and then everyone ponies up for the tuition hike.
June 17, 200717 yr Yeah, if it was a purely political statement, I doubt they would be the only public university involved.
June 17, 200717 yr Florida's public universities need more money badly. However, the state refuses to either give more funding or allow tuition increases. It's downright idiotic. Sure they're keeping it affordable for students, but that's not really useful if it's not affordable for the universities.
June 17, 200717 yr This is politics as usual. Remember that TK used to be in the Legislature. Problem is, how long can TK hold his breath?
June 18, 200717 yr Thank goodness I'm in a private school...they steal 40 grand from me every year, but they make sure this never happens! Wow, 40 grand a year, I hope you're on scholarships. if by scholarships you mean loans/my parents...I think I get some limited scholarship or something, but if any, it is EXTREMELY limited. I envy my roommate who is on partial scholarship and is an RA so he doesn't have to pay for room and board...
June 18, 200717 yr FSU@Home should grow....online courses are cheaper and easier to schedule. Personally, I hate the idea of online classes when you actually go to the college. Apparently, Bernie Machan is threating severe budget cuts at UF if his newest tuition increase plan is vetoed by Crist.
June 19, 200717 yr I dont see this problems with FIU, the school keeps growing and hiring better personnel. I would think FIU which has less clout would be struggling more
June 20, 200717 yr FSU has excellent faculty and staff. New students will be allowed to enroll to replace graduating/leave students. A 1 for 1 trade. So if you have it and want to bring it to Tallahassee.....FSU is ready, willing, and able.Just make sure to be early, cross your t's and dot your i's.Personally, I hate the idea of online classes when you actually go to the college.Apparently, Bernie Machan is threating severe budget cuts at UF if his newest tuition increase plan is vetoed by Crist. We do everything on the computer pretty much already. Most basic Math classes quiz and test on computers, English classes required computerized journals, and everyone uses Blackboard for grades/transcripts/e-mail. Science classes have LON-CAPA (or as I call it, LON CRAPA).FSU going hybrid online-classroom for more classes would not be odd and would be welcomed.
June 20, 200717 yr Admissions already is a joke to begin with now this is only going to complicate it even more. I agree with Cape though that most of school is using internet now that its not really that big of a change or a problem.
June 28, 200717 yr Looks like Governor Crist has given in: http://www.tallahassee.com/apps/pbcs.dll/a...7014/1067/RSS15 Oh what a masterful politico TK is: http://fsu.edu/news/2007/06/27/tuition.rates/ The thread title needs to change to "State tuition differential rate bill passes into law"
June 28, 200717 yr So if tuition is average 4,500 its going to be raised to somewhere around 6,000 a year? If the students will see something out of this it wont be that bad.
June 28, 200717 yr So if tuition is average 4,500 its going to be raised to somewhere around 6,000 a year? If the students will see something out of this it wont be that bad. My average tuition at FSU (In-State) is $3000 or so. So my raise in Fall 2008 can be no more than $500. They can raise up to 15% a year at FSU and UF. FSU wants to hire 3 new Meteorology/Oceanography/Environmental Science professors and I know other departments expect to hire more professors for their needs.
June 28, 200717 yr Plus if you have bright futures it wont really affect you at all. It shouldn't affect most people if Bright Futures covers it.
June 28, 200717 yr Plus if you have bright futures it wont really affect you at all. It won't effect anyone in college right now so . This needed to be done though, I'm just glad I still won't be paying anything with bright futures.
June 28, 200717 yr Looks like Bright Futures won't cover this: http://www.wctv.tv/home/headlines/8214677.html That soaks up my FSU Scholarship for the extra fee by the time everything is said and done. Darn.
