Updated: Da Meat Hook Signs Extension With Nationals

First baseman Dmitri Young is close to agreement on a two-year, $10 million contract with the Washington Nationals, a baseball source told ESPN.com.

Young, who signed a minor league contract with the Nationals in February after a troubled 2006 season in Detroit, has been one of baseball's most surprising success stories this season.

He ranks eighth in the National League in hitting at .331, and was Washington's representative on the 2007 NL All-Star team. Young had recently been mentioned in several trade rumors as a candidate to go to a contender before baseball's July 31 non-waiver deadline.

Young will become the second player to sign a contract extension with the Nationals this week. Second baseman Ron Belliard agreed to a two-year, $3.5 million deal with the club Monday.

Remember, the team is moving into a new stadium next year....they need someone to market around and that city loves Da Meat Hook.

The city barely knows who Young is

Yeah, see that's where your wrong....we aire the postgame call-in show here in Richmond and most of the calls were for him to stay and for the team to build around him.
