August 3, 200719 yr and the injuries keep coming... we need to figure out what is causing such an increase in injuries. it could simply be that we got unlucky this season, but it's crazy that it got THIS BAD. what team has had the highest number of players go on the DL (and what is that number)? and what team has had the highest "number of DL days"?
August 3, 200719 yr Author The Marlins have placed Renyel Pinto on the 15 day DL after leaving the game last night with a left shoulder strain. In his place, the Marlins called up Carlos Martinez from Double A Carolina. Martinez appeared in 12 games with the Marlins last year before undergoing Tommy John surgery. In 23.1 combined innings between Jupiter and Carolina, KMart is 1-1 with a 3.47era and a .255baa. In his last 10 games with Carolina, he had a 1.38era while allowing just 10 hits, 2 walks while striking out 13.
August 3, 200719 yr It'll be interesting to see how much velocity he's lost. or gained.... After TJ surgery? Meh.

August 3, 200719 yr It'll be interesting to see how much velocity he's lost. or gained.... After TJ surgery? Meh. Pitchers frequently gain velocity following TJ surgery. And they frequently drop a little bit too. Hopefully Martinez is a product of the former. He was already throwing high 90s.
August 3, 200719 yr Don't try to cover your tracks. Your posts can only be taken in one way: you didn't think that gaining velocity was a possibility.
August 3, 200719 yr Don't try to cover your tracks. Your posts can only be taken in one way: you didn't think that gaining velocity was a possibility. I think by the way I said "meh", I introduced that I knew there was a possibility. You need to bone up on your internet lingo. :mischief
August 3, 200719 yr First, you suggested that it was a given Martinez was going to lose velocity through your first comment. Then you confirmed that view by saying "meh" in the second comment. "Meh" is a general word that conveys being unimpressed. You were unimpressed with the possibility of gaining velocity following TJ surgery. I love semantics.
August 3, 200719 yr It'll be interesting to see how much velocity he's lost. or gained.... After TJ surgery? Meh. Pitchers frequently gain velocity following TJ surgery. That is true
August 3, 200719 yr I just hope this doesn't turn out to be a season-ending injury for Pinto. He's done a really nice job this season, and was looking good of late. That being said, it will be interesting to see how K-Mart does.
August 3, 200719 yr Pinto is a havy hit to the BP but a healthy K-Mart is just HUGE. He can quickly move Gregg to the 8th inning leaving K-Mart to upgrade the closer role

August 3, 200719 yr From the Wikipedia article: It is not uncommon today for pitchers to throw harder after the surgery than they did before the injury that caused the surgery to be necessary. However, this results not because of the surgery itself, but from the rigorous rehabilitation that ensues following surgery. :mis2 So technically, any pitcher-including healthy pitchers- can steal a page from the TJ rehab program to increase their velocity. Obviously it's not that simple or it'd be widely used already, but it does give something to chew on. If I was a AAA pitcher struggling to ever be called up to the bigs, I'd be doing a lot of research on this.
August 3, 200719 yr The other report Ramp showed looked more like TJ advertising. I wouldn't mind seeing a more in-depth article that shows the instances where pitchers gain velocity, lose velocity, and when they stay the same, including the probabilities of each--and while they're at it, they can also throw in the probability of recurring injury. I don't care much for a stat that says "85 to 90 percent chance of success" when I have no idea how exactly they're defining "success."
August 3, 200719 yr You can't just rehabilitate something that wasn't originally hurt. Hence the term "rehabilitate."
