August 3, 200719 yr Mavericks to sign veteran Jones 03:42 PM CDT on Friday, August 3, 2007 By CHUCK CARLTON / The Dallas Morning News ccarlton@dallasnews.com The Mavericks strengthened their depth at shooting guard and small forward Friday, agreeing to terms on a two-year deal with veteran swingman Eddie Jones. Owner Mark Cuban confirmed the pending deal with the unrestricted free agent. Jones, 35, is expected to fly to Dallas on Monday where he'll take a physical and officially sign. He'll receive $1.83 million in the first year from the Mavericks' bi-annual exception. The team still has its $5.3 million mid-level exception to use for another free-agent acquisition. Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks' president of basketball operations, declined comment until the deal is official. Jones (6-6, 200 pounds) is a three-time All-Star who has averaged 15.4 points per game in 13 NBA seasons. Throughout his career, he's been considered an excellent outside shooter and defender. Even though he averaged a career-low 7.7 points a game last season with Memphis and Miami, he showed that he could still deliver late in the season. When Miami lost star Dwyane Wade with a shoulder injury, Jones played a key stopgap role. He started all 15 Miami games in March with Wade sidelined, averaging 13.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists. He shot 46.2 percent field, including 41 percent on 3-pointers, during that span. With the Mavericks, he'll give the team another look at shooting guard and small forward to go with players like Jerry Stackhouse, Devean George, Greg Buckner and second-year guard Moe Ager. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dw...e.dc772abe.html
August 3, 200719 yr He was still pretty good last year, but he disappeared in the playoffs (what else is new?). I don't know how many minutes he's gonna get with the Mavs, but he should help them out in spots.
August 3, 200719 yr Wow, Riley really doesn't give a s*** does he?! What is it now, Kapono, Posey (they way its going, its a matter of time before he is gone too,) Eddie, (am I forgetting someone?) I guess this means Wright's going to start at SF this year? Thats the only good thing that can come out of all this, to finally see him on the floor.
August 3, 200719 yr Saying Riley doesn't give a sh*t cause he let Eddie Jones walk is extremely laughable. Some SFs still available I like are Matt Barnes, Ruben Patterson and Charlie Bell. Matt Barnes and Charlie Bell are very underrated players and Ruben Patterson is a veteran that knows what to do.
August 3, 200719 yr I guess it fits him just right, after all, he always chokes in the playoffs and now he's joining the biggest choke team of all-time.

Its not just Eddie man, its the fact that people are leaving left and right, Shaq and Zo are getting older, and he comes in with SMUSH PARKER!?!? Come on...Buit we are in a tight cap position, so I guess I shouldn't bitch.

Im surprised the teams with the MLE like you guys and Boston havent scooped him up. He is a great player to pair with teams that already have stars. Might be because he tried to rape his nanny.

August 4, 200719 yr I really hope Riley knows something we don't..... Not that losing eddie is major but the guy does play great defence....
August 4, 200719 yr I really hope Riley knows something we don't..... Not that losing eddie is major but the guy does play great defence.... DID play great defense. I don't think anyone who watched him at the end of last year would say he still plays great defense.
August 4, 200719 yr Smush is a very talented on the ball defender especially with his size. He also defends the passing lanes very well. If Cook can play NBA defense which I think he will; especially with his size he is a big thick guard, our defense immediately gets better. Cause JWIll doesnt play defense and Kapono plays matador defense.
August 5, 200719 yr Good riddance, I mean I like the guy but he is not what this team needs. I welcome in REAL role players for a CHAMPIONSHIP RUN! Patterson? Now that's an idea worth drooling about.
August 5, 200719 yr f*** Patterson. The last we need is yet another aging vet. Good player but not for us. We need to get young already.
August 6, 200719 yr f*** Patterson. The last we need is yet another aging vet. Good player but not for us. We need to get young already. We're younger than you think. The only oldies are Tonie, Shaq and Jwill.

The only oldies are Tonie, Shaq and Jwill. Look, I'm not one of those annoying "We're so old!" people but just because we only have a few old guys doesn't mean our young guys are any good. Right now the only young guys that we have that have actually done anything are Wade, Haslem, and Wright. By the time Shaq is gone Haslem will be 30 and Wade will be 28. Which is in only 3 years. We need to get some youth and develop them for when Shaq retires. That's exactly why our roster looks so weak right now. No one ever thought of what would happen when our guys start leaving one by one. Next year will be even worse if J-Will leaves and we get nothing for him. And Zo will retire as well. Hopefully Cook and Wright see big minutes this next season and J-Will is traded for some young guys. I heard a rumor about him going to the Warriors for Pietrus and Jasikevicius. Maybe that'll happen. Summary: Having so many vets left us with no future.
