As for the play, it was pretty impressive, but Valentin deserves more credit for that out than Phillips does IMO. Just my two shekels.

Which is a bad thing. OPS is a crude measure of offensive performance, I'd personally use EqA or WARP numbers (those have D too), but it's a simple stat most people on a message board, not named Joe Morgan or John Kruk of course, can understand that is vastly more effective then counting runs, rbis, hrs, and batting average in determining how good a player is offensively. Homers, great! (And big ups to him for having nearly a 50/50 career rate home/away in such a hitters park). Average? Not as important as OBP. He drives in runs, which means he has a good lineup spot around (which he does). He steals bases, which is basically irrelevant, and he plays great D, which is super cool. Maybe you should care that his OBP is .330 when .380ish Adam Dunn is behind him. I sure as hell care Dan Uggla has a .330ish OBP and it pisses me off he bats 2nd all the time. I like Phillips, I REALLY like how Cincy got him, and I REALLY like his salary for the next few seasons with the production he outputs. Maybe you took my comments a bit hard. But people are saying he's the best 2B in the NL, and an elite 2B, which is far from the truth. My problem is, the Reds don't know how to use him. It's really laughable how Phillips has over 500 PA batting 2-3-4 this year. Talk about moronic. Edwin Encarnacion and Alex Gonzalez each have higher OPS versus RHP then Phillips. Just think about that. Let alone, Dunn, Grif, Hamilton, Hatteburg (vs RHP), and Keppinger (cause he's just out of control right now), are all superior. Phillips should not be batting above 6th vs RHP with that team around him. vs LHP, I can see him moving up quite a bit, but that's about it. I'd love to see an argument to the contrary besides a simplistic "fantasy baseball stat" assertion that he's awesome, and "not caring" about lower OBP versus superior hitters in the Reds lineup.
