Fox's NLCS Coverage biased towards Marlins?

Featured Replies

Fox Sports coverage of the Cubs was about as fair and balanced as Fox's coverage of the news.

You're half right. ;) Cubs fans had to endure seven games broadcast on Rupert Murdoch's network by a second-rate crew in the booth. Instead of Joe Buck and Tim McCarver, we got Thom Brennaman, Steve Lyons and Al Leiter. Not exactly household names. More importantly, the Cubs fired Brennaman, Lyons was an ex-Sox player, and Leiter played with the Marlins championship team.

And Joe Buck broadcasts the Cubs' rivals Cardinals games. And McCarver too was a Cardinal. And Bret Boone once played for another NL Central division foe. Oops, I just gave reasons to complain possibly next year (let's hope not.)

Instead of appealing to the audience dominated by Cubs fans, Fox's crew commented about how courageous and gutsy the Marlins were. In the first game, the Cubs scored four runs primarily because the Marlins center fielder misjudged two fly balls. The Marlins shortstop made an error on an easy Sammy Sosa ground ball. This crew then proceeded to emphasize what a great defensive team the Marlins had with a final score of 9-8. Hardly a defensive battle.

Yeah, judging balls is one of Pierre's problems. But in most other parks, his speed is able to make up for it. But not at Wrigley where infield flies are carried by the wind onto Waveland. 9-8? Of course it was a high-scoring game. Like there could ever be a pitching duel in that bandbox you guys call a stadium.

After game four, where the Marlins gave up about 40 runs, this same crew became hysterical about the great defense that had given up 40 runs in four games. To most fans, a great defense is one that wins close low-scoring games. Not so with this clearly biased crew. They were in their own world without any understanding what audience was listening. I hope that comes back to bite Fox. I am sure that this was not an intentional decision by Fox. Nevertheless, it is a testimonial to corporate stupidity.

8 runs. Learn to count.

And how does it feel to rely on hired mercenaries from the Pirates? Oh, well, I guess you can't be too upset. Of the 30 who have played a significant bulk of their time this year with the Cubs, only 10 were with the team. Two-thirds of your team fans had never seen in a Cubs uniform. Only the Dodgers come to close at one-half. Most teams are closer to the one-third mark.

But I am thrilled about the results for one reason. Fox is now stuck with the Marlins in the World Series, instead of the Cubs. And not having the Cubs in the Series will cost Fox and Rupert Murdoch millions of dollars. The Cubs would have brought a much greater audience to the World Series.

Too bad attendance and casual fans don't win championships. Shut your belly-aching, go schedule a THIRD PLACE game and revel in the dough. Oh, but it dosn't matter to FOX! FOX had already made a killing selling nearly all the advertisements for the World Series last week while the Cubs and Red Sox were choking. And for bad ratings. It's Major League Baseball that is penalized. They can not charge FOX, or NBC (Costas!) a large fee for rights to the series.

I was born on Oct. 9, 1945. The next day, the Cubs lost the seventh game of the last World Series they have played. And just like the poor fan that interfered with Alou catching the ball in Game 6, I would not be surprised if Fox Sports blamed me, too, for the Cubs loss in the most recent series.

Wait? What? FOX Sports blaming a fan instead of Prior, Wood, Baker, Sosa, Gonzalez, Farnsworth, etc., or Beckett and the Marlins for the Cubs losses seems to be a bias against the Marlins.

i think you guys are the homers

I think you're going by your friends who are obvisuly wrong. The coverage was bias toward the cubs all the way.If anything they couldn't stop talking about Prior and Wood.

Hey say what you want about Wrigley, at least we don't have orange seats.

I think everyone is jealous of the Marlins. I read in the Sun Sentinel and it's pretty obvious the rest of the country hates our Marlins. They're jealous of our South Beach, nightlife, great weather and now our baseball team

Actually, if you look around the country no one cares about this WS at all. Outside of NY and Miami there isn't a single city that cares about this series.

Oooh, making fun of the color-scheme of our stadium's seats. You got us good!

It's garish. As a Marlins fan, wouldn't you like a nice new stadium? One that evokes baseball rather than the 1970s?

Fox's coverage has been FAIR? Are you kidding me? Tonight during the anthem they showed all Yankees, Joe Torre and one Marlin....Jack McKeon. By the way, Tim McCarver was an analyst for the Mets for years and then went over and worked for the Yankees.

Fox has been biased all along. I had to turn the sound off during the Chicago series. Thom Brennaman, Steve Lyons and Al Leiter were just awful. They knew everything and they never shut up. How about during the celebration afterwards...when the trophy was being given to Lorie...Steve Lyons could barely remember who he was if Lyons ever knew in the first place!

Interesting. I had to employ the mute button.

So either fans of both teams were paranoid....

or Thom and Steve just suck.

Thom and Steve do suck, but I can't blame Fox for being biased.

If it was my pocketbook I'd be biased too. Miami is a baseball wasteland as far as the country is concerned, and trumpeting the Marlins as an attraction is about as compelling to a national audience as showing you lighting your farts on fire.

Oh for the love of Pudge, can we move on here? The series is over, we won. If they want to whine and complain, let 'em, we won, they lost, end of story. They can say whatever they want, we're in the Series, they're not...again.

I agree with you that under normal circumstances, fans of a team who loses in the playoffs should get over it, move on, and go from there. But you have to understand something...these are CUBS fans we're dealing with. Here in Chicago, there is such an obsession for anything Cub-related that for some fans to actually acknowledge the Marlins were better than their team is like admitting the Titanic wasn't all that it was cracked up to be. With all the talk here about curses, fan interference, and other things...you'd think this entire city was obsessed with the Cubs. And the sad truth is...for a majority of Chicagoans...the Cubs are an obsession. So for many Cubs fans, especially in the media, admitting defeat is worse than death.

I started a thread talking about how some Cubs fans are begrudgingly rooting for the Marlins because they can't stand the Yankees. While that on it's face sounds like no big deal, try to understand that many Cubs fans don't really care who wins this series. They're too busy crying in their beer over their team's choke job. If any of you have personally experienced a Cub fan's arrogance and pompousness over their team when they met the Fish in the NLCS, that was no fluke...that's how the Cubs fans are all the time. It's just that when they were on a national stage, they revealed their true colors when their team started to sink like the Titanic. I know it's tough dealing with the Yankees and their fans, but once this series is over...win or lose, the Yanks fans will go home. You don't have to LIVE with Yankees fans all the time except for the transplanted New Yorkers who are living in Miami. But here in Chicago, Cubs fans are like a plague. Even with the White Sox playing well, the "Cubbie Machine" is in full swing, and it'll take a full anhilation to knock the Blue Monster to its knees.

Of course the Fox network coverage of the NLCS was biased towards the Cubs. With all the hype here in Chicago about the Cubbies, as well as the national attention the team was getting, is that a surprize? Once again, you folks in Miami got a blast of what we Sox fans have to live with all the time...media coverage slanted towards the Cubs, arrogant fans, and the constant "Cub love" coming from all sides. And God forbid if you're not on the bandwagon. All you have to do is read the message boards from White Sox Interactive to get the clue. What the Marlins did was literally do a "David vs. Goliath" to the Cubs, and knock down the entire Cubbie empire. Now, the natives are restless, and I can tell you as a Chicagoan, they'll be restless for quite some time...or at least until the start of next season.

Check out these threads on WSI, and you'll see what I mean.

Now Fox is "Pro-Marlins" and "Anti-Cubs" Chicago Tribune Article: Marlins don't deserve to be in Series

Once again...I agree this subject should be dead and buried. However, don't tell that to a sore-losing Cub fan.

Oooh, making fun of the color-scheme of our stadium's seats. You got us good!

It's garish. As a Marlins fan, wouldn't you like a nice new stadium? One that evokes baseball rather than the 1970s? Yes, I would like to see a new stadium. But PPS is what we have now.

Why are you here?

Why are you here? Why is anyone here? If you want me to post something more to your liking, send me suggested topics. You could also post the same question to the White Sox fans on this board.

It started because someone called Wrigley a 'bandbox', which if they've ever been to the Friendly Confines would know is an absurd understatement.

I'm here, and I'm queer. Well maybe not queer, but I'm here. Deal with it.

Admin....I smell a troll......

And by the way, we're here because we're MARLINS fans. Are you even a Marlins fan?

Oh please, don't get bent out of shape. A troll is like that guy who posted that he was so excited about the Fish since he became a fan after the Giants series, and showed a pic with empty seats. I post to this board because I was fed up with the White Sox fans bleating like they got into the World Series. I like to think I add a little beyond the GO MARLINS WE LOVE U.

I've posted time and time again that I think the Marlins are a good team and were incredibly smart in building it from 1999 on. I am no fan of Loria/Samson, but I think Dombrowski and Beinfest are the bee's knees. I've been a Pudge fan since his early days in Texas. Seriously. Why am I not posting on the Cubs board? To tell the truth, I could do without the constant negativity, Dusty-bashing, and free agent dreaming (Pettitte, Tejada, Pudge, AND Castillo) at this point.

Plus, I'm curious about Marlins fans. I already have a good sense of Cubs, Yankees, and Red Sox fans. Just broadening my horizons. So sue me (or tell on me).

Alright, sounds reasonable. But to be honest, the Sox fans have been there for us no matter what. So sue them for being happy.
