Goodell thinking about putting a future Super Bowl in London

Featured Replies

it's a stupid notion

first it hurts some cities in your domestic base - i can tell you part of the reason why there is such an interest in football here in AZ is the stadium is sold out and there is excitement over the SB - even for those of us who cannot touch tickets, all the events going around the event are accessible

second - it alienates some of your core fans - keep in mind who your core fan is - there are a lot of people who will be pissed over the notion of having the showecase of americas game played on foreign soil

this would be akin to the soccer federations saying let's play all the champions league games in the US - instead of home and away it'll be two neutral stadiums and we can tap into the many millions of US fans who want to be fans, but just don't know it yet because they haven't seen real football by elite teams

london was one of the first franchises to die in NFLE - there is very little interest of knowledge of the game over there by the natives

you want to build the game overseas? - sponsor academies - get the kinds involved - make it trendy and fun - make it accessible to their people - don't just bring over the showcase game that is silly expensive and a media circus

showing them 1 superbowl isn't going to change 100 years of their thought and ignoring the game and all of a sudden make a nation of NFL fans

i know guys in england who are hardcore seahawk fans - i've met up with them in seattle and road games - there are some diehards over there who were born over there - but right now it's pretty small

not to mention the time zone issues - the latest you could start the game would be 9pm local - 4pm EST and 1pm PST - given that the event with big halftime shows and all the production goes a solid 4 hours you are looking at the pivotal moments of the championship game being played by a bunch of jet lagged players at close to 1am - brilliant

I can understand the NFL's take on this and I think it's a solid strategy, but I don't know if the end goal is feasible. Who's going to get into American football around the world? Anybody that would is either in love with football, rugby, or both. Baseball and basketball at least had potential to expand because they were already global sports and they are relatively easy to play for the poor.

I don't know if football has any sort of big time potential outside of the United States, so it may be a one time thing just to have a Super Bowl in Old Trafford or whatever and that's it.

Baseball is a lot more expensive to play than football

Baseball and basketball became internationally popular by being showcased in other countries...but having the super bowl there is the wrong way to go about it...i say have half the exhibition games in other countries (leaving one home and away game for every team)....or if they wanna showcase the best, maybe play the pro bowl in other countries

While London was one of the first franchises to die, apparently there is at least novelty interest in the NFL. Supposedly, 95,000 tickets have been sold for the Dolphins/Giants game at Wembley.

That being said, holding the Super Bowl outside the United States is kinda dumb. That'd be like the Australian Football League holding its Grand Final in the Citrus Bowl. (Not that Aussie Rules can be played in a standard American stadium anyhow...)

:thumbup

I think it'd be pretty cool.. what time would it be at though?

Really though.. im just getting drunk at a party or a bar, i could care less where its at.

Baseball was "it" in Japan and Cuba way before the professionals started making visits. Showcasing wasn't the factor resulting in the massive popularity of the game, it was a case of the game being imported by Americans. Sure it helped in growing the game, but it wasn't what planted the seed as the NFL is trying to do. In Cuba's case the game's popularity on the island was a result of the American prescence in the 1880s and 90s.

Yeah, this is a good point. "Football" is HUGE in England, too bad it is referring to an entirely different sport. American Football fails in Europe for the same reasons Soccer [as a spectator sport] fails here.

It seems like it would make way more sense to have a game in Canada or Mexico if you HAVE to go international.

Baseball with uniforms and catcher's gear is expensive, but football with pads is more $. Not sure how you can logically make that argument.

And you're 100% wrong on why baseball is popular in other countries. Baseball is popular in countries where America had a foreign policy presence for a period of history (Cuba, Japan, Puerto Rico, etc.) and the Americans played baseball with the natives. Then, based on that, the MLB has started academies, international scouting, games overseas, etc. But the origins come outside of the game's reach, hence why the potential lay there. You'll never, ever, see anything in American football like you see in baseball with the emerging WBC and you'll never have any sort of world presence. Trust me on this.

Here another reason why American Football won' be a global game:

RUGBY

Why should Europeans play American Football if they already have something similar and perhaps more exciting in Rugby?
