Brazil to Host 2014 World Cup

By ERICA BULMAN ? 1 hour ago

ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) ? Brazil was chosen host of the 2014 World Cup on Tuesday, returning the showcase event to the soccer-mad country that held the tournament in 1950 and has captured the title a record five times.

Brazil was the only candidate and won in a unanimous vote by the executive committee of the sport's governing body.

"Soccer is not only a sport for us," Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said. "It's more than that: Soccer for us is a passion, a national passion."

FIFA president Sepp Blatter said Brazil now has "not only the right, but the responsibility" to organize the 2014 tournament. Blatter then handed the World Cup trophy to Lula.

Lula, who flew in for the announcement, promised that Brazil "will now with great pride do its homework." And, he added, "if everything works out well, we will win once again a World Cup."

The vote came on the same day the 2011 Women's World Cup was awarded to Germany. Germany, the host of the 2006 men's World Cup, beat out Canada.

After the withdrawal of Colombia in April, Brazil was the sole candidate, the choice of the South American continent enjoying the right to host the event. Brazil had been told by FIFA it wasn't guaranteed the tournament simply because there were no opponents, saying it had to provide a solid bid package.

In Brazil, 50 mountain climbers hung an enormous national team jersey bearing the slogan "The 2014 World Cup is Ours" from majestic Sugar Loaf mountain in Rio de Janeiro. At the famed Maracana Stadium, workers spread flags across the field reading, "Maracana is ours and so is the 2014 World Cup."

Blatter said the lack of competition from other South American nations was one reason behind FIFA's decision Monday to do away with the rotation system that gave each continent a turn at hosting the World Cup. The decision takes effect with the 2018 tournament.

"We are a civilized nation, a nation that is going through an excellent phase, and we have got everything prepared to receive adequately the honor to organize an excellent World Cup," Brazilian Football Confederation president Ricardo Teixeira said.

Brazilian Sports Minister Orlando Silva, national team coach Dunga, veteran striker Romario and renowned author Paulo Coelho were among those making the trip to Zurich.

"Of course, dreams demand hard work and we Brazilians are ready to face this task," Coelho said. "All the countries in the world have two teams ? the national squad and the Brazilian squad."

Brazil hosted the World Cup once before, 57 years ago. Since launching its bid for 2014, Brazil has emphasized why the country needs the World Cup, much more than what it has to offer the tournament.

"Over the next few years we will have a consistent influx of investments. The 2014 World Cup will enable Brazil to have a modern infrastructure," Teixeira said. "In social terms will be very beneficial."

"Our objective is to make Brazil become more visible in global arenas," he added. "The World Cup goes far beyond a mere sporting event. It's going to be an interesting tool to promote social transformation."

Tuesday's presentation was smoother than the one in July, which underlined Brazil's status as a developing nation with repeated images of its car factories and dry statistics.

Blatter had recently questioned Brazil's infrastructure and bid plans, but FIFA said last week that a stadium-inspection trip in August showed the country could put on "an exceptional" tournament. Brazil has 10 of the world's largest soccer stadiums.

However, there have been delays in hosting some major events, problems with violence in the streets and the public transportation system in the country is often overloaded.

The Brazilian soccer confederation estimates that the construction and remodeling of stadiums will require an investment of $1.1 billion, though that could vary significantly depending on the cities chosen to host games.

that is going to cost ALOT of money... they have to dump hundreds of millions each into 10 stadiums and fix their transport infrastructure... one hell of a daunting task.

hey, if there is one country that can host a world cup on an emergency basis its the US... nobody has more stadiums/money! if they can pull it off brazil should be a great host, and i dont want to root against them, but if they cant... how awesome would that be!

its the whole rotation of continents the reason why it landed in Brazil, there was no other choice and its unfortunate that such a acclamated sporting event has to go through so much so it can be hosted in a south american country, but hey if anyone can pull it off is probably Brazil.

anyway this rule of the rotation has just ended with Brazil's bid

Interesting choice. It will be a lot of work but I'd imagine Brazil can pull it off. It would be a great atmosphere for the Cup.

Aren't we already the backup for South Africa in 2010? I haven't followed that at all, just curious.

Rotational system will probably return once smaller countries start bitching about Cup staying in Europe....

i would think that we would be the backup for almost any world cup with the ammount of stadiums we have

No. It goes to Germany if S. Africa doesn't get things together.

again? where did you hear that? they would be the luckiest sons of beeetches in the world if that happened

The idea is that since they hosted the last one they are ready for it...this is only if SOuth Africa doesn't work out, which it will.

In the American continent, it should and always will be USA, Mexico, and Brasil. No other countries have the stadiums and infrastructure. Argentina would be nice, but that country is all f***ed up and not even close to being ready for such a huge task, hence they didn't even try.

I, for one, am for the whole rotation of continents. It gives everyone a chance to not only host, but also witness it. You know how much a plane ticket to South Africa is?? At least $2500!!! And that the plane ride, not the thousands youre gonna spend there as well. Brasil?? $400 plane ride, and you could literally for a month off of $200.

If it does take place in Brazil, I will seriously consider going.

I know its 7 years away but it won't be coming to the US any time soon and Ive never been to Brazil.

I would probably try and catch 4 matches.

i also was for the rotation, i think it was going fine. i also like the concept of just not allowing one continent to host the wc twice in a row... like if england hosts it in 2018, spain cant host it in 2022, theyd have to wait until 2026. i think its very likely the next time the us gets the wc its going to be part of a north american joint bid... either us and canada or us, canada, and mexico. joint bids are the wave of the future with the world cup.

a bit off topic but I will try everything in my power to get to South Africa in 2010.... (only to see the MNTM disappoint again)

The US is probably the last country on Earth that needs to split a World Cup with someone else.

how long has the rotation been going on? whats the order?

I agree. If the US hosts again, it should be JUST the US. Joint bids are nice when they are in small, close countries like Korea/Japan, Belgium/Luxembourg, Holland/Belgium, but not USA/Mexico or USA/Canada. This country is big enough as it is, you don't need to add on more miles for traveling fans, or players. If that was gonna happen, it would be awesome to have a South America super host between Brasil, Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela, Chile, Uruguay, Peru. Just make a couple of cities host.

I would be if not for the fact that they moved Australia from Oceania to Asia. Nobody in Oceania, not even New Zealand I don't think, has the infrastructure.

Why did they move Australia?

On possible WC relocation:

Rumours have circulated in various news sources that the 2010 World Cup could be moved to another country.[6][7] Some people, including Franz Beckenbauer, Horst R. Schmidt, and reportedly, some FIFA executives, have expressed concern over the planning, organisation, and pace of South Africa?s preparations.[8][6] However, FIFA officials have repeatedly expressed their confidence in South Africa as host, and have stated that the event will not be moved, with FIFA president Sepp Blatter re-iterating that "Plan A... Plan B... Plan C is that the 2010 World Cup will be staged in South Africa".[9][10] Mr. Blatter has stated that there is a contingency plan to hold the World Cup elsewhere but only in the event of a natural catastrophe, and that the 2006 World Cup in Germany also had a similar contingency plan.[11][10]

Despite reassurances by FIFA that the event would only be moved in the case of natural catastrophe, rumours continue to circulate about possible relocation of the event.[12] These rumors have been criticised by South Africa?s Deputy Finance Minister Jabu Moleketi, saying that some have targeted the event to reflect their persistent negativity towards South Africa and Africa.[13]

And I assume Australia moved so that they have a better chance to qualify.

Aren't they easily the best team in Oceania?

Aren't they easily the best team in Oceania?

yeah without a doubt, but the problem is that when they qualify they have to go on a round robin with bottom line qualifiers from all continents, so its actually easier to move to Asia, when they will only have to battle Japan and get an automatic spot on the World Cup.

kinda like CONCACAF with USA & Mexico having no real competition to qualify for the world cup.
