The 2008 Tennis Thread

Featured Replies

I know not much of you like tennis, but the new season just started and I figured the few of us can do our chatting here.

Andy Murray and Mikhail Youzny have won the two tournaments this year (Doha and Chennai). Youzny even beat Rafa Nadal in the Doha final. The Australian Open starts next week (Jan. 14) and it should be a good one with a lot of players finishing the season strong.

It's unfortunate tennis doesn't get as much recognition as it should. When I started seeing it in person is when I really started to appreciate it. For some reason, it just doesn't translate well to television. I'm looking forward to the Sony Ericsson Open on Key Biscayne. This will be my tenth year working there. I've even read a rumor that Monica Seles might try to play this year.

I used to have a HUGE crush on Monica Seles

She's not your typical hottie but for some reason I thought she reeked sexy.

To me she was the first womens power tennis player

If you can believe it, this is what she looks like now:

The draws are out for the 2008 Australian Open, which starts off on Sunday the 13th.

Notable first round matches:

Roger Federer (SUI)

v.

Diego Hartfield (ARG)

James Blake (USA)

v.

Nicloas Massu (CHI)

Novak Djokovic (SER)

v.

Benjamin Becker (GER)

Rafa Nadal and Andy Roddick both drew qualifiers in the first round.

Im intrigued by Blake this year, he's never done anything to astound me, but I think after the Davis Cup victory, he and Roddick should be motivated to play better this year. I read that Rafa has had problems with a foot injury since 2005, so it'll be interesting to see how it affects him, or if it's full recovered by now.

What's the coverage looking like for the AO?

Starts tomorrow at 7pm on ESPN2.

But you know the matches are gonna be super late since it's in Australia, like 12 hours ahead of us.

Haha my sleep schedule is so thrown off lately, I don't think I'll miss too many of them...

Although, I could try to catch them on replays or such, but then I have to avoid seeing scores.

Who ya got in the AO?

On the men's side:

Roger Federer (obvious reasons, defending champ)

David Nalbandian (guy had a sick end to 2007, beating Federer and Nadal twice each in back to back finals)

Novak Djokovic (is due for his first Grand Slam win)

On the women's side:

Justine Henin (nastiest female backhand ever, just doesn't lose)

Serena Williams (defending champ, when she's on she cant be beat, i love her)

But it'll probably be Federer and Henin.

Notable players packing their bags after Day 1:

(9) Andy Murray

(16) Carlos Moya

Donald Young

(18) Juan Ignacio Chela

Roger Federer is being taken to the absolute limit by Janko Tipsarevic, down 5-4 in the final set right now

EDIT: Federer holds serve, now tied 5-5. I have no idea how I ended up watching tennis at 4:30 in the morning but this is great stuff right here

I don't watch Tennis often, but I didn't miss a single second of that match. It was absolutely crazy.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is putting together a Cinderella style Australian Open. He's all the way to the semis where hes gonna run into Rafa Nadal. Funny thing, the AO has had a two "no-names" make it all the way to the finals in the last two years (Fernando Gonzalez in 07 and Marcos Baghdatis in 06). This is where those guys made their names.

In the top half of the bracket, Federer faces James Blake and Novak Djokovic takes on David Ferrer in the quarters.

Note: If Blake beats Fed and Nadal wins the AO, Rafa takes over the World No. 1 spot.

The only thing that holds Fed from being the greatest of all time is his lack of dominance over Rafael Nadal, especially on clay.

On the surface, that has nothing to do with this, but if Blake pulls the upset and Nadal wins out, it will be a well-deserved #1 ranking for him. If he can pull up and get a Grand Slam this year, it may well be him we'll be talking about as the greatest male tennis player of all time.

And Jo Wilfried Tsonga makes his way to the final by knocking out Rafa 6-2, 6-3, 6-2. Once again, another player is making his name at the Australian Open.

On the womens side, what is the hottest final I can remember: Maria Sharapova v. Ana Ivanovic. I love both as women, but I'd rather see Ivanovic win.

Thought after beating Serena that Jankovic would give Sharapova a good match, but Maria was dominating her early and then Jankovic had back strains and pretty much hobbled through the rest of the match. Should be a good women's final.

I don't know what the hell happened to Tsonga after that first set. He looked drained. Once Djokovic got on a roll, it was over.

And so Nole claims his first (of many) Grand Slam title. He won't win Roland Garros or Wimbledon, but he's got a hell of a shot at taking the US Open.
