Local sports radio rant . . .

Featured Replies

In the last year, the quality of local sports talk radio in South Florida has gone from bad to worse. I used to hold the local stations in high regard, especially when compared with the crap that was passed off for sports talk in other parts of the state (i.e., Tampa and Orlando).

But now, as hard as it would have been to imagine, the local stations have reached those pathetic levels.

Look, I never expected QAM or WAXY to be on par with WFAN or WEEI, but at least TRY! Instead, South Florida has lost the only local voice I ever listened to and trusted, and will lose the best young talent on the radio, all within the span of four months.

While some of you may disagree with this assessment, once Hank Goldberg left WQAM, that station has become unlistenable! First off, I am sick and tired of hearing about the Dolphins and the draft on every show. The team finished 1-15 and they are still stuck on talking about the Draft that won't happen for another month! Back in January and February that was all that was on the air: Jake Long, Chris Long, Matt Ryan, Chris Long, Matt Ryan, Jake Long, Chris Long . . . . Geez, I accidently hit 560 last night at 7:15 p.m., on THE DAY AFTER SELECTION SUNDAY and the topic was Jason Taylor's appearance on "Dancing With The Stars!" And don't even get me started on the ten minute commercial breaks, which start every seven minutes! Odds are that 85% of the time my radio turns on and hits 560 on the "dial," there's another stupid mortgage commercial on! There's a little game I like to play, perhaps you should try it too! When listening to another station, and that one goes to commercial break (or just pick any random time), quickly switch to 560. Place bets on whether they're at a commercial. Put your money on "they're at a commercial." Trust me, it's like rooting for the House in blackjack!

I guess that's what happens to a station that is inhabited with either former Dolphins who don't provide any coherent analysis on other sports, or "so-called experts" like "The Big-O" who THINKS he's the next Mel Kiper, Jr. only because he bought himself some airline tickets to Mobile or Indianapolis. Hey, Big O, how's Tyrone Calico doing? Remember when you kept hammering the Dolphins for not picking him up in the draft?!?! Plus, that idiot cannot go a full half-hour without using the word "a$$" in his vocabulary. For those of us that have kids in the car while driving them around, it gets old! Get an education, buddy! Get a vocabulary book! What, you didn't learn enough at the "Connecticut School of Broadcasting!"

And now that John Boog Sciambi is leaving 790, there is no reason to listen to that station at all either. I'm convinced that the average IQ of the 790 listener outside of Boog's show is on par with your average caged orangutan! I, for one, do not get, nor do I want to "get" LeBatard and Wiener's show (I refuse to call that idiot by his idiotic "testicle" nickname). What is the point of listening to random sound effects for four hours and Wiener's incessant and idiotic giggling! Then, there's the morning guy, who has convinced himself that he is the "Morning Drive Time Guy" for WFAN660! Hey, Sid, you're in South Florida, buddy, not New York. Perhaps you should try harder so that you can "crack" the talent at The FAN or at ESPN1100, until then, I don't give a crap about the Knicks, Giants, Yankees, or Rangers!

I am so glad that I have Sirius in my car and get to listen to "Mike & Mike in the Morning" on my way to work. And if I'm driving to a meeting or client during the day, I am thoroughly entertained by "The Herd with Colin Cowherd." Now, with Boog gone, that mid-afternoon timeslot is rough. Before Boog, I had "The Dan Patrick Show" on ESPN Radio, which was the BEST sports talk show anywhere -- especially when Keith Olbermann joined him from 2:00 to 3:00! The "Mike Tirico Show" is okay, but lacks personality, and I can't stand "The Stephen A. Smith Show" that follows Tirico. Finally, the drive home from work with "Sportsnation with Josh Seibol and Orestes Destrade" is a good show and they talk GOOD BASEBALL TALK!

Okay, now that I have that off my chest, I feel better . . . .

all i have to say is.........................................

try listening to sports radio in boston nowadays...although its more tolerable since the pats lost the super bowl and all these f***ing fools up here finally shut the f*** up about the pats being the best team ever and the best dynasty ever and belicheat is the best coach ever and the red sox are the new yankees and the celtics are god like and danny ainge is the best and smartest GM in the business and etc...its sickening how highly bostonians think of themselves right now

you forgot 760 in palm beach, but that's also bad with the narcissist host evan cohen polluting new york on the airwaves from 4-7 (but to his credit, has the most baseball talk in the area) and the nerds steve and craig on afterwards. in some ways, evan acts like sid, thinking this is the wfan affiliate.

sports talk radio has been dreadful in miami for years, and it's just gotten worse, i can barley listen to it anymore, although i can tolerate evan a bit more than the others.

You havn't figured it out yet? Florida is a football state.

Period.

Go to Boston, Philly, New York and you hear is baseball 24/7, but all you ever hear in Florida is football. Dolphins, Bucs, Jags, Canes, Noles, Gators...

That's all you ever hear.

Baseball just isn't that popular in Florida.

yet...all those teams have established fan bases...the marlins and rays will be there soon enough

The uber-coverage of the Dolphins is old news. That's been super annoying for years. I do wholeheartedly agree with your basic premise that sports radio talk in SoFla has gone astoundingly downhill in a short few months. It's reached the point now where I don't even bother to turn the channels on. After years of listening to sports talk I'm back to listening to music.

I didn't forget 760, it's just that their reception is so spotty (even in Palm Beach County) that I just don't bother to listen to them. I get the same shows 760 offers from morning to drive time on my Sirius, but with clear stereo reception.

However, speaking of 760, stay tuned for updates here as myself, State Senator Dave Aronberg, and Palm Beach County Sports Commission President Donald Dufresne (we all work in the same office here in WPB), will be appearing on 760 soon. We're trying to work out the schedule, but Senator Aronberg and myself won the "right" to have a show on 760 as part of an auction at the Lou Groza Collegiate Placekicker Awards Banquet last December (the same auction where I won the "Honorary Bat Kid" prize for my son last year). When we get the dates and times, I'll post it here.

This year I've hardly listened to sports talk radio. After Hank and Kaplan left there's noone really worth listening to. I used to enjoy the power hour with Hank and Mandich but Mandich with his lapdog is useless. I had listened to morning sports talk going back to the First Team with Lamont and Cefalo but now I'm listening to Lamont on 610 (news, not sports) and the nut jobs on 940 rather than the Joe or Sid.

It seemed like it had gone downhill for the past several years. Boog and Ed Kaplan were the only two personalities left on the air that knew squat about baseball. Hank's tolerable but he's just getting too old and crotchety. Mandich is a joke. Sid is fingernails-on-a-chalkboard-newyorker. Big O isn't even worth mentioning.

Pretty sad state of affairs.

Years ago WQAM had my favorite lineup:

Joe Rose, Steve Goldstein, and Jeff Deforest

Neil Rogers,

Boog and Chris Moore,

Hank Goldberg

Ed Kaplan.

The "Midday Guys" with Boog and Chris Moore was one of the most enjoyable shows around! I used to love their opening with the "Caddyshack" lines, and then the "Animal House" lines.

However, I think you got the lineup wrong because Boog and Chris were knocked off the air when Neil Rogers joined QAM in 1998. I remember the old line-up in 1997 (because I was back in Miami studying for the Bar exam) was Rose/Goldie/DeFo in the morning, then QAM had Rush Limbaugh, followed by Boog & Chris, then Hank. When Rogers came on board, I think they then shuffled Boog & Chris out and brought Mandich into the timeslot. I don't ever remember Boog & Chris being on the air at the same time with "Uncle Neil."

A little surprised to see some love for Ed Kaplan. He was always my favorite. Good on all sports, and way above all on baseball. Jeff Deforrest is still on, just hard to find. Not good with baseball, but I think he's somewhat funny and entertaining. 1470 between 6-8PM. WWNN?, I believe

yeah pierre, Kaplan was always willing to talk baseball.

It's not a customer service line, it's the radio? Did you ever think that:

1) Noone cares about some Direct TV problem

or

2) There were people who called in before you who were ahead in line?

do 790 the ticket going have baseball show?

They've had one for a while now, but only on Saturday I believe.
