Treanor needs surgery on injured hip

Featured Replies

MIAMI -- Results from an MRI exam on Monday revealed Marlins catcher Matt Treanor has three muscle tears in his left hip-pelvic area.

On Tuesday, Treanor said that he will have to face surgery. The question remains: when?

For now, Treanor plans to put surgery on hold as he hopes to be able to play again this season.

The 32-year-old has been the club's primary catcher. But he went on the disabled list with what has been called a left hip strain on July 8. On Monday, Treanor was examined by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia.

Basically, Treanor has the same injury that Philadelphia Eagles quarter Donovan McNabb had in 2005. It has commonly been called a sports hernia. Treanor had a cortisone shot on Monday, and on Tuesday he was doing some baseball activities: catching pitchers in the bullpen and taking some batting practice.

"Surgery is imminent, regardless if I play the season with the cortisone," Treanor said. "I'm still going to need surgery.

"I'm going to try to get through it with the shot, and see how it goes. He told me to resume full activities. I had quite a big workload. Tomorrow I'll see how I recover from that, and Thursday I hope to play in some games."

The Marlins aren't considering activating Treanor any time soon. But if all goes well, he could start playing in some Minor League rehab games as early as Thursday.

"I miss the team and I feel like an outsider being on the DL," said Treanor, who has appeared in 54 games and he is batting .240. "Three muscles are involved, and there are some small tears in each of them. There is a chance I will get hurt worse.

"I felt like the best thing I could do is see if I could get through the season. I feel really good today."

Recovery time from the surgery is three weeks to resume baseball activities, and four to six weeks to get in game shape.

With Treanor on the DL, the Marlins have been going with John Baker and Paul Hoover behind the plate.

Treanor notes there is risk to continue playing, noting that he could aggravate the muscle tears more.

Asked specifically what they are calling the injury, Treanor said: "You hear sports hernia. It's muscles that protect the pelvic girdle. All three are related."

Treanor first felt discomfort in his hip area at Oakland on June 21. He's since had two MRI exams taken, one in San Diego in early July and the one in Philadelphia on Monday.

If he opts for surgery during the season, there is a chance he will miss the remainder of the year. If he puts surgery off until October, he would be fully recovered in plenty of time before next Spring Training.

I think I'm a bigger Matt Treanor fan than most, and this definitely sucks...but there is a positive here...and it starts with Mr. Beinfest...do what you need to do Admin...our catching options are scarily thin...

Good Luck to Matt though! He's no All-Star but he's got a hell of a drive out there and that gets rewarded longterm...good luck Matt!

...oh and my girl thinks Matt is cute...stay off my TV Matt!!!

I think this will further the Marlins pursuit of a catcher. We need a better option than Paul Hoover.

EXACTLY!!!
