This post is a lot better than the intangible/heart/hustle argument. Just say "don't go overboard with the stats." Don't sputter the nonsense. And Guzman is doing better than Jeter this year when you account for one of them being a good defender, and one of them an absolutely miserable one.

 

Don't get lost in David Eckstein's eyes. He still sucks no matter how dirty he gets.

As is your right. However this was about five years ago. And even now the guy still plays hard, has great instincts, and is "baseball smart". Therefore even these days there are certain teams that I would still want Jeter on if I was a GM. A team full of young guys in need of veteran leadership, a team in need of someone to teach kids HOW TO BE A WINNER and how to be a PROFESSIONAL, I'm still taking Jeter even with diminished skills. But that's just my opinion and I only posted it as an example of why I don't get OVERLY immersed in stats. Anyway, if any of you feel differently, great. I'm not going to try to convert you to MY WAY OF THINKING or tell you guys how to post, or how to say things. I'm not looking to APPROVE of your posts or opinions. And I don't care if you approve of mine.

Just one question....how do you feel about stats? More specifically, things like OPB, SLG, and WHIP?

 

Stats are useful, there is NO QUESTION about that. But I DO NOT judge a ballplayer solely on stats. Look, some of you guys might feel differently, and that's cool. But I've been watching this game long enough that I put a high premium on intangibles, such as baseball smarts, instincts, heart, and desire. In addition to a guy's stats, HOW DOES HE PLAY THE GAME? Is he "baseball smart"? Does he hustle? Is he THINKING out there in the field, on the mound, or at bat, or is he just reacting? Is the guy a WINNER? Some of these intangibles cannot be measured by statistics. Guys either HAVE "IT", or they DON'T.

 

Good lord. It's like Pandora's box was opened and all of the evil of the world was let out all at once

:notworthy Hey guys, I just joined up over here, figured I'd say whats up. My name is Alex, I live in Hollywood, 52 years old, played a lot of baseball as a kid and as an adult in various leagues, until I just got too old, lol. Been a baseball fan my entire life; I remember the 1962 Mets, the Yankees of the 60s, and all the great players of that time: I grew up watching Whitey Ford, Mickey Mantle, Bob Gibson, Roberto Clemente, Sandy Koufax. Went to plenty of games where I got to see them play in person. I learned to love this game and I learned to LEARN this game. Moved to Florida in 2000, but only became a Marlins fan during the 03 season when that team got my attention during the summer; I predicted their eventual success to all my buddies back home by early August. I told everybody that this seemed to be one of those rare "teams of destiny" that come up every once in a while, and I was proven correct when they got to the WS versus my New York Yankees. I had to make a choice, and it was a no brainer, I chose the young and exciting Marlins and have been a huge Marlins fan ever since. As for other things about me, I'm a fan of all sports except hockey, and I enjoy smoking fine cigars. I'm passionate and opinionated about my teams and I respect everybody that gives respect. Looking forward to contributing over here.
