August 23, 200818 yr Can a player (regular player, not 10/5, no contract other than one offered a player during his first three years in the league) be traded from team A to team B and then within say seven or thirty days be traded to team C? I was trying to find the specific rule on this earlier in the morning without success which absent a rule would suggest the answer is yes, but admittedly I could be asking the wrong question (query) or I'm looking in the wrong section of the MLB/MLBPA basic agreement. If someone knows definitively I'd like to know.
August 23, 200818 yr Cliff Floyd was traded from the Marlins to the Nationals to the Red Sox in the span of like 3 weeks.
August 23, 200818 yr Actually, again with the Red Sox but didn't they and the Pirates trade some players and trade the EXACT players back just a few days later like 4 years ago? From what I can see, a player can be traded as soon as he becomes a official member of the team.
August 23, 200818 yr Some 3 way trades OFFICIALLY have a player go from Team A to Team B to Team C. Although the player may never play for or even don the uniform of Team B, he is officially a member of the team for a few minutes or seconds before he is traded again. Also, Mike Piazza was traded from the Dodgers to the Marlins on May 14th, 1998, then from the Marlins to the Metropolitans on May 22nd.
August 23, 200818 yr I remind you of the 2007 tale of Ryan Langerhans. Traded from Atlanta to Oakland on April 29th and then from Oakland to Washington on May 2nd. So no, there is no rule as far as I can tell.
August 23, 200818 yr Author I love antedoctal evidence. Thanks, works for me. I was thinking about it in the context of stealing Reggie Willits from the Angels without dealing with Moreno. Purely fantasy stuff for my own amusement. I was thinking about who needed someone we're probably going to move bad enough that they'd play the patsy with the Halos.
