Miller or Olsen or Both

For as bad as Miller has sucked, he'll be cheaper than Olsen next season that's why I think the FO will keep Miller. Olsen has outlived his prospect status, miller has another year or two to see if he can get it all together.

Olsen is only a year older than Miller. Miller is 23 and Olsen is 24. I wouldn't call a 24 year old someone who has outlived his prospect stauts. He is still young, and can still improve.

But, Miller will be cheaper, so I would rather just have him.

Does anyone think the inconsistency the Marlins have been showing (lack of back to back wins in August) has to do at all with the rotation? I am well aware that the Marlins pitching has been better and that run support has been extremely low. But, I honestly believe that one portion of the issue is when Nolasco pitches and dominates and gives the team an opportunity to win, the next game you have a scott olsen on the mound that is incredibly inconsistent, incredibly emotional (still) and has issues protecting leads. Josh Johnson then pitches well and then anibal gets zero run support and has issues with his command. Volstad has been pretty good but the Pen has sucked overall, which has created all sorts of momentum issues.

IMO, if the rotation were set up favorably and had Nolasco, Johnson and had olsen as the 4th guy or even the fifth, that the pitching would have been helped tremendously...

Honestly, it is difficult to have this discussion becauseof the offensive struggles and the pen struggles, but I do believe we can credit this malaise with a lack of consistent quality starts. Olsen and Anibal haven't faired too well lately and Volstad has had some issues later in games (fatigue anyone?).

In relation to this conversation, I think that Olsen has shown us brilliance once in his career and has since then showed us tremendous inconsistency. I would not keep Olsen because he is too expensive for what he is. Miller, IMO, is not going to be the guy. He is inconsistent and gets smashed often in the bigs. We have guys like Ryan Tucker and Sean West precisely for this reason.

It's more likely the fact that the offense has disappeared.

Yes... I allude to the lack of run support. The Pen has also sucked and Scott Olsen and Anibal Sanchez make me nervous every time out. Pitching sets the tone.

I would keep both.

Olsen has been inconsistent but he's not as bad as people on this board seem to think.

Right now his WHIP is better than Volstad or JJ or Sanchez. His BB/9 is less than Volstad or Sanchez. His OBA is 2nd among the starters, etc. He is durable. He tends to go deep in games even if he doesn't get the CG. His problem lately is giving up homers. Some people might argue that he gives up too many fly balls but so does Nolasco and he is dominating right now.

The first thing I want to say is: you are absolutely correct that calling Scott Olsen useless if wrong. Scotty, if he stays like this, will likely be around the league for a very long time. I see him as being an upper-4 ERA pitcher, and as a left hander that is in demand on a ton of teams for back of the rotation. However, that's for teams that do not have our pitching depth. We can do better than what Scotty will gives us. But also going back to the "scotty is useless" thing, as already noted he's only 24yo. What happens if his slider starts being a plus pitch again? You don't bank on something like that happening, but fact remains it could.

However, the biggest concern with Scotty-O is his BABIP. Pitchers are basically always around .300. Scotty is way under .300, at .269. When that evens out next season, he's not going to be this good. Plus not only is his The main thing about trading Scotty is not just that he doesn't have as much potential as Miller, but it's also selling high on him. Sell high, buy low.

And the HRs are a concern. It's not like he's getting unlucky with them, if anything you can say he's been lucky he hasn't given up more. If you look at his HR/FLY, 12.4% of his fly balls were HRs in 2006, 12.8% in 2007, but only 11.1% this year (and that number has been climbing as the year progresses, one of the reasons he has been doing a lot worse than earliar in the season.).

I have to admit I was surprised when I saw that Nolasco and Olsen were giving up around the same FB and GB. Nolasco has been doing better there since June (aka since he got good), but even since then it hasn't been much higher than Olly's . And Nolasco is pretty prone to the long ball, that is my one fault with him. Ofcoarse the other things still point in Nolasco's favor, but that's still something I found interesting.

But when his BABIP evens out, his WHIP is going to go up a lot, and his ERA is going to go up a lot. Josh Johnson's BABIP is high at the moment (.331), and his periphials suggest he'll do well. Chris Volstad will continue to get better as he gains experience (one of the biggest problems right now for him is walks, but that shouldn't continue as he gets adjusted to the league). Anibal Sanchez I agree that his injury should still be a major concern, but I would rather sell on Olsen now while his value is high. Something I hope we do is bring Waechter back. He could start if Anibal struggles. And, as unpopular as I'm sure it will be with people here, there's still the RVHs, Badenhops, Traherns in the minor leagues. I mean, we're talking about just our #5 spot, with 1-4 being very good.
