The manager of the Chicago White Sox in 2004 apparently will be either Cito Gaston or Ozzie Guillen, and general manager Ken Williams is expected to announce his decision some time on Monday.

In a twist to settling on either Gaston or Guillen, Williams might hire both men, a source told the Chicago Sun-Times -- Gaston as manager and Guillen as a manager-in-waiting.

Guillen, however, told the Chicago Tribune that he is not interested in returning to Chicago to be merely a coach.

"I have a great job with the Marlins," Guillen told the Tribune. "My kids are in school here and our family loves it. The only way I'd leave is for the manager's job."

Gaston had a 683-636 record in nine seasons as manager with the Blue Jays, including World Series titles in 1992 and '93. His experience would be a good fit. Gaston would also give the White Sox a manager with name recognition.

Guillen, 20 years younger than the 59-year-old Gaston, is a fan favorite in Chicago, having spent 13 seasons playing shortstop for the White Sox. But Guillen, who retired after the 2000 season, he has no managerial experience. In recent years he has been around managers such as Tony La Russa and Bobby Cox, and is currently on Jack McKeon's staff on the World Series champion Marlins.

"Right now I'm pretty positive," Guillen told the Tribune. "But I also have to have my mind prepared for something negative. I have nothing to lose.

"I'm really looking to wear No. 13 again," he said. "I'm ready to help those guys win."

Gaston and Guillen were the only candidates interviewed by White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf.

hey if ozzie leavs u think we can get Zimmer? He has a home in FL

I hope not.

Zim is probably going to the DRays.

Id hate to see Guillen go, but if he gets the manager job, best of luck to him

That's my take on it, too. I had heard either Gaston or someone else (not Guillen) would get the job....guess that's changed.

if Oz doesnt get the manager job in Chitown he will be our manager in 05...

Naw We need some one who speaks Spanish!

Imagine him talking to people (that we might not keep) like Luis and 432Juan!

What would he tell him?

It makes things a lot different!

zimmer is a beast why would u not want him in a marlins uni?

Lets ask Pedro if Zimmer is a beast

if Oz doesnt get the manager job in Chitown he will be our manager in 05...

That's what I was thinking.

zimmer is a beast why would u not want him in a marlins uni?

zimmer's an a**, there would be too much negative energy there. our guys are very young & happy-go-lucky, he just wouldn't fit in. he'd probably spend his time beating up umps or something.

remember this:

"you're on drugs"

"WHAT?!!! !#$!#$!@##$@ I'LL KILL YOU!"

I'd like to see Ozzie manage after Trader Jack retires

ozzie's a likeable guy, but the dude has no experience. we could find a better replacement after jack dies.
