The Boston Red Sox were close to signing free-agent outfielder Rocco Baldelli on Wednesday night. It is expected to be announced at the Boston Baseball Writers Dinner, where Baldelli will be honored.

Baldelli, 27, has been limited to 155 games the last three years because of a mitochondrian disorder, a condition that leaves him feeling extremely fatigued after just a brief workout.

Baldelli recently underwent a series of tests as Massahusetts General Hospital and the results were positive. The Red Sox were struck by Baldelli's persona and are optimistic he can be a significant contributor in 2009.

I think this is perfect for both sides. Sox need a 4th outfielder, Rocco gets to come home.

it would be awesome. I went to HS with Baldelli at Hendricken and it would be cool to see a Hendricken kid on the Sox. Right now we have a bunch of them in Chicago, Minnesota, Tampa, LA etc... it would be cool to hear of one in the local papers playing for hte Red Sox or Paw Sox.

I will never cheer against Rocco but in that Red Sox jersey.....I can't cheer FOR him either.

It's official, as is Smoltz.

Red Sox had a busy past two days I am sure.

I guess Kotsay will not be back...I am not sure if this will be better for the BoSox. If healthy Baldelli may even start and he is a great talent as well. More power and speed than Kotsay for sure. However Kotsay is a rock, you can count on him to be there

Kotsay>Baldelli

The Red Sox have also been rumored to be interested in former Dodgers closer Takashi Saito. However, the Smoltz signing may end that speculation.

Well, here is the story. Kotsay is set to return even w/ the Baldelli signing.

BTW, does anyone know how much Baldelli will make?

lot of outfielders. I guess since Ellsbury isn't the stud they thought, and Drew always getting hurt, Bay is the only solid fulltime guy.

I think the article states that Kotsay will also be backing up 1st base. So his role will probably gravitate in that direction. If Big Papi's health continues to decline (I think it was his wrist that gave him problems most of last year) Kotsay would step in. I'm sure Lowell will probably be traded b4 the season begins, keeping Youkilis at the 3rd base spot.

Yes Kotsay will be mostly at 1st but he would be that 5th outfielder for the Red Sox. The bench should be very deep now

Great signing Rocco is a solid player defensivl and when healthy can shine offensivly and has some speed.

Think the sox are again the team to beat but if they realed in Tex they could of had a sick corner IF with Tex an Youk.

Still the AL East should come down to the wire this year with the Yanks Soxs and Rays.

still need a middle infielder....

Umm they have Pedrioa and Lowrie with Lugo still in the mix and i belive Cora is still there aswell but they should get someone better and cheaper then Lugo because quite frankly he sucks.

Cora is gone, and I am talking about a deep bench. The bench isn't deep when your bench guy for middle infield is Lugo. Lowrie is the new SS, but he can't play SS, he can backup 3B, Lugo can play SS and 2B but not 3rd. Cora was a great fit, but he is gone.

WEEI interview with Rocco and being with the Red Sox, his ailments, and the position he will be playing etc... And a little talk about my great Alma Mater :D

Do you mean he can't make a throw or he is a bad fielder?

IDK, I am not the ones saying this it is the Red Sox. They have Lowrie as a SS/3B ideally 3B, and Lugo as a SS, but they are looking for another SS/Bench middle infielder who can play all the positions like Cora could.

A deep bench? Heck, this is one of the best, deepest benches in the league. Youk can play 1st and third. Kotsay can play OF and 1st. Big Papi can DH and play 1st. Lugo can play 2nd and SS. Lowrie can play SS and 3rd. Man, its sick. Can they use another bench player? Why not? Do they actually need one, I don't think so. This team is stocked.

On all of there Depth Charts hes billed as the starting SS and backup 2nd and 3rd.

Base salary of $500 k, plus an additional $1.25 M in roster bonuses depending on his health, so a possible grand total of $1.75 M.

Lugo won't be starting.. They tried to send him to wherever Eric Byrnes is playing for Byrnes. They have a problem with wanting SS and them never panning out. Cabrera, Lugo, Renteria... They will be looking for another guy most likely, but Lowrie played the second half of the season and the playoffs... even when Lugo was healthy.

Always liked rocco. But because of the disease he has can't remember the exact name of it but I know he can't be an everyday player because of it or he gets run down.
