Posted January 20, 200916 yr Marlins' Sanchez won't pitch in Classic Club denies right-hander permission to play for Venezuela By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com MIAMI -- Opting to keep a closer eye on Anibal Sanchez, the Marlins are denying the right-hander permission to compete in the World Baseball Classic for Venezuela. According to newspaper reports in Venezuela, the Marlins have told Sanchez that they'd rather have him in Spring Training instead of competing for his native country. Sanchez was in line to be part of a Venezuelan pitching rotation that will include Johan Santana and Carlos Zambrano. The 24-year-old Sanchez underwent right shoulder surgery in June 2007, and while he returned in '08, he appeared in 10 games and was 2-5 with a 5.57 ERA. Sanchez made two appearances pitching in the Venezuelan Winter League before the Marlins shut him down. Sanchez is projected to be part of the Marlins' starting rotation, along with Josh Johnson, Ricky Nolasco, Chris Volstad and Andrew Miller. Marlins reliever Renyel Pinto will pitch for Venezuela in the Classic. Joe Frisaro is a reporter for MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs. Good move by the Fish, he needs to be in ST... :thumbup
January 20, 200916 yr On the positive side a good decision by the Marlins to keep a closer eye on Anibal and have full control of his preparation for the season. However, it does beg the question on whether he still is struggling in his comeback from the injury and if he will be fit to go in April
January 21, 200916 yr Good, I like Anibal but I feel he still has some kinks to work out and I'm really not too confident in his ability yet. I'd rather him concentrate on working through his pitching issues in ST rather than playing in the WBC.
February 2, 200916 yr http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...rtnerId=rss_fla HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -- For health reasons, the Marlins are blocking Anibal Sanchez from competing for the Venezuelan team in the World Baseball Classic. Although Sanchez is able to pitch now and he projects to be in the rotation, Florida sent paperwork to Major League Baseball late last week, preventing the right-hander from competing in the Classic. Sanchez underwent right shoulder surgery in June 2007, and he was limited to 10 starts and 51 2/3 innings in '08. Teams have a say with their players if there are medical issues. "We submitted the form to baseball late last week, which is what they asked us to do, and that's where we're at," Marlins president of baseball operations Admin Beinfest said on Monday. "We talked to him, and he knows. Our plan is to not have him pitch." The Marlins on Monday kicked off their Caravan week at a luncheon at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in South Florida. Sanchez, who has been training in Jupiter, Fla., the past three weeks, attended the event. The Maracay, Venezuela, native is focused on the season, not the Classic. "I just want to be ready for my season," Sanchez said. "I feel good." Someday, Sanchez wants to represent his country, but he says that will have to wait. "I agree with the team. I'm not going to the World Baseball Classic," Sanchez said. "I know and understand the situation. I had the surgery. I tried to keep working in Venezuela, and they said no. I'm happy. I'm going to go to Spring Training healthy." Sanchez turns 25 on Feb. 27. He is expected to be ready to pitch when the Marlins open Spring Training on Feb. 14 at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter. Sanchez is a front-runner to be in the rotation. The Marlins are trying to get him sharp and ready for the season, which is why they want to work with him instead of having him pitch in the Classic. Florida is hopeful Sanchez regains the form that made him a standout in 2006. In his rookie season, he was 10-3 with a 2.83 ERA in 18 games with 17 starts. The highlight of his career was tossing a no-hitter against the Diamondbacks on Sept. 6, 2006. Sanchez made two appearances pitching Winter League ball in Venezuela before the Marlins shut him down. "I know my career is here. I want to pitch here," Sanchez said. "The Classic and Venezuela are important, because it's my country. I've got my family close. For the Classic, I'd represent my country. That's something I've never done before, and someday I want to do it. But it's not my time right now. My time now is to get ready for the season."
February 4, 200916 yr This is completely and utterly off topic I just didn't know where to ask. Is Emilio Bonifacio playing for the DR in the Caribbean WS? I've just caught the game in the sixth inning and I've yet to see him.

How do you know this? Is it just common knowledge?

How do you know this? Is it just common knowledge? I believe someone here posted it earlier. That said, it has become "common knowledge" that every Marlins player has it in their contract that they have to be able to be here for the week of FanFest.
February 4, 200916 yr I posted this in MLB a few days ago. The contract clause came to light around the time of the FanFest that Miggy skipped and was made note of throughout the media as well as at town hall meeting(s) during the event. No one has disputed the existence of a participation clause in their contracts to my knowledge so I assume it's in fact true.
February 4, 200916 yr Thanks guys! I had no idea about this contract stipulation. Is it just the Marlins that do this as it relates to Fan Fest? The Nationals' Ronnie Belliard is playing for Los Tigres. Sorry to be asking so many questions!

I don't know when the Nats' FanFest is and the only reason Marlins fans know about it is becaise of what happened with Miggy. Obviously the MLBPA doesn't have an issue with it so I assume other teams have similar language in their contracts as well.
February 4, 200916 yr Ok gregg misch(sp) on790 is saying the fish are in love with emilo and really want him to start wheather it be in the inf or OF. Kinda not what I wanted to hear. Talkin a lot to about how maybin can't be our lead off guy this year cause he's gonna k a lot too. I do think it is gonna be a good amount of pressure on maybin makin him our lead off guy opening day but I think he can do it.
February 4, 200916 yr I'm not sure you want to take anything Misch says as gospel whether it be about Maybin or Bonifacio or anyone else. The Marlins may be concerned about Maybin's Ks (although he was much better the second half) and they may be in love with Bonifacio (or not) but this is a contending team and this isn't like playing Reggie Abercrombie because they had a season where they could experiment, they will field the best team they can from the horses they have. It's just as strong a likelihood that Bonifacio starts in New Orleans as with the Fish or Maybin leads off as not. To suggest otherwise right now is foolish and I say that knowing how he meant that about Maybin. It's just incredibly premature.
