Dempster Released by Reds

But at a bargain basement price, why not risk it?

He has just been released and won't pitch until months into the season if at all until 2005. Why would he get a penny over the minimum?

I don't think you're going to get him at a bargain basement price. He's not going to pitch in 2004 so you have to sign him to a 2 year deal. So we'd have to commit at least $600,000 to him ($300,000 per year). But I gotta believe he'd get a better offer than that over 2 years. A rich team like the Yankees will offer him a couple of million over 2 years like they did with Lieber.

Difference being Jon Lieber was pitching rather well until he started hurting and he needed Tommy John.

So? You don't think anybody is going to offer Dempster better than a 2 year deal at $300,000 per year? Personally, as tight as we are with money, I really don't want to commit $600,000 to a pitcher who hasn't been good in over two years.

Minor League Contract until he is close to ready, than have the Big Club purchase his contract.

If you're right, I'm all for it but I call that wishful thinking.

Well, at this point it is a 50-50 shot. We'll see what happens.

He just hasn't been the same since he left the Marlins. But if the Fish are willing to deal with the fact that he may not pitch next year and may not be the same player they traded away, then this could be a steal for the Fish! :w00t

not really. His troubles started down here.

I don't know. I mean yes he struggled alot before he was traded away, but he did have his great moments.

look at what trading dumpster and floyd did:

we lose: injury prone cliff floyd and walk prone dumpster

we get: great fielder juan enc and dependable pitcher pavano

dont get me wrong, cliff is a great talent, but injury prone (missed much of 03)

dumpster is awful. isnt hard to believe he started opening day here in fla.

unbelievable how a trade le retard labeled as stupid turned out to be great. wouldnt be the first time le retard was wrong.

I guess our FO has a very good eye on when pitchers start to decline (i.e. Dempster and Alfonseca).

Seems like more evidence that the organization has a past littered with overworked and oft-injured pitchers to me. I don't exactly consider TJ surgery the result of "decline."
