Yes, I agree. They are getting paid millions and millions to have fun for a few months, and they want more? srry, i love the marlins, but come on.

the f***ers get guaranteed contracts as well. They are killing the sport as the NFL flurishes with its cap restrictions.

get over it

money rules the world

nope. but thats how it is

Anybody else remember Al Kaline? When Detroit offered him $100,000 salary (early 70's) he turned it down saying no ballplayer was worth that much.

Maybe they want more money to help their families and give the things they never had before. I may be wrong but money can turn people into greedy and selfish people.

pudge may be thinking this is his last chance to really get paid. i dont know what he's going to do but i heard i think patrick ewing once say something which kinda makes sense, he said that an athlete only has a small amount of time to work at the job so he has to try to get the most money he could possibly get.

not everybody is al kaline

i remember hearing about dimaggio fighting with the yankees in order to get a raise to i believe $100,000

I would be happy if I only got half a million a year!

That is absolute BS and you know it! If you ever had a chance of winning the 180M lotto would you rather win the 1000 dollar price? NO! Get over it! These people go into professional baseball to make money!

to make money? Or to make 10 times more than the President of the United States?

Seriously, some of these people who sit out, or lose all loyalty to a club for a few more million dollars...i have no respect for them. There is more to life than making 15 million as opposed to 12 million.

And as for Patrick Ewing. Use half a brain, invest the money, and you can earn 1 million dollars (after taxes) and never have to work another hour of your life. Much less making 5-10 million a year. That is ludicrous.

These people go into professional baseball to make money! There is an economic theory of diminishing marginal returns. In this situation, the first million means more than the 2nd, the second million means more than the 3rd, etc.

After a while it just becomes an ego trip to see if you can make more than the other guy. Then baseball becomes the business and making money becomes the game.

Say you make $10M, 6M after tax, invest half of that, without a drug habit how are you going to spend the remaining $8,000 day? The first $1,000 a day is pretty nice, the second adds a bit more, but if you aren't happy by then you never will be. The next $6,000/day doesn't bring any more enjoyment. The money is the game.

How can u tell me that is BS??? Sure more would'nt be bad, but half a million is more than enough for me. Enough to support myself. Players make 10 times that much! Even more!

It's sad, but it's true. Hopefully the overabundance of free agents and the lack of money to go around will send salaries on a downturn this offseason.

I don't think its fair to say that ALL players are greedy and want more money. I think the blame should go to their agents who are trying to make money for themsleves. I'm not defending all palyers, but I'm sure some would rather get paid less in order to stay with a certain team. Also salary raises goes with work in general. When you work for someone over a period of time you do get increases in salaries....thats just part of working.

I don't know what's up with baseball. I think that friggin player's union have a lot to do with the players being so money hungry.

Let's look at basketball. Two HOF players (Carl Malone and Gary Payton), playing for the league minimun in order to get a shot at a Championship with the Lakers. Both could be making 7-10 million easily with other teams.

How come you never see this in baseball?

its karl

you dont have a cap or cap exceptions in baseball

well in basketball i guess u can see a team dominate the leauge much easier than in baseball-in baseball u can have an awesome team like the yanks and still not win the WS-but in basketball when u have a good team-you have more of a lock on winning the finals.

I just wanna know why baseball is all about money! It's not about "the team", the friendship, the loyalty, the fun! Why? Why are all of these players so damn greedy and want more money??? How much more money does Pudge want? :( He has plenty!!! I would be happy if I only got half a million a year! That's not what baseball is all about! :( I don't know, it just makes me sad! They are supposed to be a team!

If you really want to know why, then ask yourself if the opportunity arose for you to move into a little bit better house, would you do it? Would you like to have a little bit better car? Do you want to improve your situation? Or would you be just as happy if someone made you move into a smaller house in a worse neighborhood? Or made you ride a bike instead of drive a car?

In other words, it's all relative. It's natural for people to try to improve their situation. If that wasn't the case, all of us fat Americans would cut back on a few calories a day, and there would be enough food to make sure no one in the world was hungry. Or are you only looking up the ladder?

Baseball is big business, and players are businessmen. It's not what "baseball is all about", it's what Major League Baseball is all about.

The money is the game. :book Thanks for the Macroeconomics lesson... However, you forgot something important here... the "law of dimishing returns" is based on the consumer's reasoning... What may be a lot for you, may be to little for me. It is all relative and you cannot forget that economics laws are always assuming that everything remains equal (not in reality).

Anyway, just get out of the Economics class, be honest with yourself and admitt that if you had the talent to play baseball like Barry Bonds, you would probably think 1000 dollars is crap! Ok just do not come here and tell me that you would take a pay cut for the love of a team and baseball. That is pure crap!

The players union will never allow a high priced free agent to take less and stay with a team. That is why Vlad will not become a Marlin. :banghead

[i don't like that idea. I don't know, for once i really look up to a team, and now they might be gone! :-( it hurts.

Hey, take it easy. Where were you in 1997? That was the saddest history of this team and we lost the entire team. For starters, we don't know if Pudge is staying or not. We also don't know if he wants more money, whomever is telling you this is telling you only his/her opinion. And this board has plenty of opinionated people who don't read between the lines and jump to hasty conclusions, believe me... Also, nobody has said anything regarding whether that majority of this team would come back. All to the contrary, the FO has made it clear they want to keep the core of this team intact. You can never have the same people year after year, that's the business side of this game. You improve the team, get rid of heavy contracts, or do a fire-sale and start rebuilding again. They would not start rebuilding again, therefore they will keep the nucleus of this team as intact as possible. I don't think McKeon would like to manage a team built from scratch at this point of his career...
