June 6, 200915 yr Amazing how guys come here unheralded, have a year and then get paid and then suck. I need to get paid.. maybe i can join the pen for a year
June 6, 200915 yr Oh no, how!? I mean, he was soooooooooo good! I thought he'd be good forever! Man, noone saw this coming... Yeah, no joke this time, this is why you don't buckle under the constantly rising demands of a 13 year minor league journeyman who just had the first good season of his lifetime.
June 6, 200915 yr All i can say is Oh Joe! P.S. He's pitching right now against the Yankees in the bottom of the 7th and OMG Willy Aybar just dropped a pop up and Joe No is getting taken out.
June 6, 200915 yr This is why I didn't get the outrage over not signing the guy. You can find Joe Nelsons every year in free agency(see Kiko Calero and Brian Sanches), there is no reason to spend over a million on a guy like that.

Don't count you're chickens with Sanches just yet. He's way more Nelson than he is Calero. Also, unlike Nelson, Calero has been pretty good in his career. Also, worth mentioning that the other pitcher we let go, the one with a history of injury, Doug Waechter, had a 4.50 ERA and then injured himself after 3 appearances. He's had a couple setbacks since then and completely missed both his May 11-ish and May 25-ish return dates.

I was just highlighting that you can find effective relievers and not spend millions keeping average(or below) guys.
June 7, 200915 yr We should've kept Nelson and Rhodes, and dumped Hermida...remember those posts? I actually would have liked to have kept rhodes but not at the cost of what the reds gave him. and yes those constant posts about not resigning nelson were annoying. nunez and meyer are doing just as good a job as nelson and rhodes did last season.

June 8, 200915 yr The reason most of us are upset at the loss of Nelson is that it was part of a general pattern of giving away talent this offseason without anything to show for it. And though there are undoubtedly instances where the FO was right, there was a lot of good reason to question what the heck the FO was doing when they set us up for failure in so many different portions of our lineup.

This wasn't even close to one of those times. Many of us said that this wasn't a big deal, given his 13 year history as a baseball player. The outrage about him was just a giant overreaction.
June 10, 200915 yr Joe Nelson told the Saint Petersburg Times that he has found a mechanical fix to his control and velocity problems this season. Nelson said instead of leading his glove hand (left arm) towards the plate, he has switched to leading with his elbow (left elbow) like what he did in his career season last year with the Marlins. He noticed it while playing catch with Grant Balfour, and found it to give him "sharper location and increased velocity". It not only might help him mechanically, the mental aspect may be huge as Nelson has written elbow lead inside his ball cap. He started it in his outing against the Yankees on Sunday where he shut them down in order. The outs were a strikeout, four flyouts, and one groundout on 19 pitches.

True, also its good to know Nelson has had better success in his last 3 seasons vs NL Teams, maybe its just a fluke as he has just last year had his 1st good season but you right only time will tell and he has plenty of time left to pick it up.
