Free Agents in the Marlins price range

Nick Johnson might get in 162 games if the Marlins sign him to a two-year deal.

Yeah, over the whole 2-years.

(Sorry, that was too easy.)

I believe that's what BI2008 meant...

I don't think the Marlins would have to give Johnson that much money. There are not a lot of teams that need a starting 1B and Russell Branyan,Carlos Delgado, Adam LaRoche, Hank Blalock and Aubrey Huff are all free agents so there are plenty of 1B go around. I would be surprised if he gets more than 2 years for $7 million bucks from any team.

If the Marlins could get Johnson for something like 2/$10M, could the Marlins still stay within the expected payroll limits while keeping Cantu and Ross?

What is your expected payroll? I think they could do it for $45. No way in hell $40.

C John Baker $415,000

1B Nick Johnson $5,000,000

2B Chris Coghlan $410,000

3B Jorge Cantu $6,000,000

SS Hanley Ramirez $7,000,000

LF Brett Carroll $405,000

CF Cameron Maybin $405,000

RF Cody Ross $4,200,000

B Emilio Bonifacio $415,000

B Wes Helms $950,000

B Ronny Paulino $900,000

B Gaby Sanchez $405,000

B Veteran 1B/LF Type $1,000,000

SP Josh Johnson $5,500,000

SP Ricky Nolasco $4,250,000

SP Andrew Miller $2,000,000

SP Chris Volstad $415,000

SP Sean West $410,000

RP Matt Lindstrom $1,650,000

RP Reynel Pinto $850,000

RP Dan Meyer $415,000

RP Rick Vanden Hurk $415,000

RP Brian Sanches $415,000

RP Burke Badenhop $415,000

RP Tim Wood $410,000

$44,650,000

I was thinking about $45M. So I assume it's possible, but as we've all expected, that places a lot of pressure on the staff.

Are you anticipating that the Marlins dump Anibal? I wouldn't be opposed. SLAP tears are bad news.

He was a casualty for Nick Johnson.

I make that trade everytime.

Personally if Swift is right and it's $45, I keep every pitcher and skimp the offense by only keeping Cantu and Ross. I let Maybin, G. Sanchez, Morrison, Carroll, Petersen, and likely some veteran 1B/LF guy figure out 1B, CF, and the other corner OF spot. I think preserving our pitching is the key. Maybe Anibal isn't that good, but he's better than RVH, G. Taylor, and probably K. Winters as a "5th/6th SP." And that's worth the few bucks he's going to make. We have to get quality innings from our starters. We're going to hit enough to compete. It's all about the pitching.

It will be interesting to see what the Marlins do to help the bullpen. I just can't see them going into the season with Nunez and Lindstrom pitching late in games. I think they should bring in someone to close but not a top shelf guy. Someone like Saito, Wagner or Mike Gonzalez. Nothing hurts a young starting pitcher more than watching a good effort go down the drain thanks to the bullpen.

Keeping in mind that pitching is the emphasis for 2010, I would still think it's a wiser investment to have Nick Johnson at $3-4 million than it would be to have Anibal Sanchez for $2 million.

Abreu did just sign for $9 million a year basically. I don't know if NJ takes 1/3rd of that, injury prone or not. They are very similar statistically with huge OBP and lower slugging. I'd imagine NJ will get a 2 year deal somewhere for at least $10-12 total.

And Anibal is pretty locked into the low $1 millions. It won't get to $2. I think $1.2 is realistic, if not lower.

What about Jason Giambi this offseason?

He's likely not looking at getting a starting gig anywhere else after putting up a .725 line. Maybe someone like Pit picks him up and tries to "Hinske" him, but fact remains he aint getting much interest.

But if you look at his season line. He still hit for power. He still walks an absolute ton. The problem is he finished the year with a .230 BABIP. You even that out to his career .300 rate, we're talking about a .249/.382/.430/.812, which isn't great but room to grow in SLG from moving from massive Oakland Coliseum to Landshawk (His ISO in Oakland was .171. In COL, it was .292). I don't think it's that far fetched to say he could possibly rise back up to the mid 800 OPS range, though certainly shouldn't be expected. And maybe that doesn't even out, maybe his talent has gotten horrible and he can't hit for any semblance of average anymore.

He's also someone who can hit LHP, so it's not like we have to worry about a platoon situation, but it also gives us a situation of easing Gaby Sanchez into 1b, since Giambi certainly aint playing 162 games, and Sanchez can see a lot of LHP, which he mashes and could raise his confidence about hitting at this level.

But the other big thing is: Let's say he busts again, or Gaby Sanchez breaks out, or Logan starts tearing it up. He has a career PH OPS of .302/.397/.540/.937 and was awesome this year for COL. Yeah, it's just 73 PA, and a lot of that came from when he was great. But we're still talking about a guy who's talent transition to a bench role, we're not talking about a Luis Gonzalez situation here. So worse comes worse we move him to the bench, where he could match Ross Gload's 700 OPS.

And yeah there's the problem with his defense, but he's not TERRIBLE out there, he's just pretty god damn bad and better suited for DH.

The million dollar question is of coarse how much does he cost. But he's not gonna make the 5m he had this past season. If we offer him something like, 1 mil with 2 mil in incentives, does he take that because we give him a place to start? At best we pay 3 mil for Giambi as a good starter. At worst we pay 1 mil for Giambi as a bench bat. I mean maybe we have to do something like 2 mil with 3 mil in incentives, and at which point it really starts becoming "so what's our payroll going to be", but real interesting to me.

And there's also the glaring fact that we'd still have a hole at 3b while spending money elsewhere.

I think this is an absolutely great idea haha

How about signing Josh Fogg to a minor league deal? The Rockies aren't going to resign him.

The way Fogg pitched in his long relief role last season, he is without a doubt getting a major league contract.

I love Fogg (especially since I know his mom, who taught at my old middle school, thus I've met Fogg a few times :D), but he probably fits better with another team, and don't be so sure that the Rockies don't resign him. He helped a ton in his spot starts for the team (aka their own Badenhop).
