Posted November 10, 200915 yr Marlins giving Penn another look With righty's addition, Florida's 40-man roster at 34 By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com 11/09/09 4:48 PM EST MIAMI -- The Marlins are planning on taking another look at right-hander Hayden Penn. The team on Monday announced it had selected the contract of the 25-year-old, who spent most of the season at Triple-A New Orleans. Florida's 40-man roster now stands at 34. The Marlins acquired Penn late in Spring Training from the Orioles for infielder Robert Andino. Out of options, Penn was on Florida's Opening Day roster. He made 16 appearances for the Marlins, including one start. He was 1-0 with a 7.77 ERA. Penn struck out 27 and walked 20 in 22 innings. For New Orleans, Penn appeared in 14 games, with 13 starts. The right-hander was 2-4 with a 4.11 ERA, striking out 62 and walking 26 in 70 innings. Penn will get another chance this ST to make the 25 man Roster
November 10, 200915 yr If St. Claire can't turn him into a decent 5th starter or long reliever, he should start packing his bags.
November 10, 200915 yr Penn sucks. Why is he getting another shot? Because he struck out 27 in 22 innings. Lets just see what a new pitching coach can do for him, or conversely, what he can do for a new pitching coach. He's a pitching staff version of Jeremy Hermida (and I pray to God that comment doesn't start three pages of debate). The Red Sox are trying to turn around our guy. Maybe our guy can get this kid on track. If not, he's disposable. Not a bad deal.
November 10, 200915 yr Is it like last year and we would have to have him on our Opening Day roster if we decide to keep him? Or if he shows something in ST, can we keep him in AAA as depth?

He would have to clear waivers to get sent back to AAA, just like last year. You can also add Rick Vanden Hurk to this category.
