Javier Vazquez to Yankees

Featured Replies

Uggla is a top 10 second baseman, and I don't see how Vazquez is a top ten SP in MLB, last year not withstanding.

It's a good, not great, trade for the Yankees. It puts them above 200 million in payroll and I have a lot of doubts about Vazquez's abilities to succeed in New Yankee Stadium with his flyball tendencies.

More notably, it frees up another OF spot in New York - Bay or Holliday perhaps?

Sabathia-Burnett-Vasquez is a pretty sick 1-2-3 and defo makes the move worth it from a Yankees point of view.

yeah i'd have to agree here. there is a reason that vazquez has been traded 5 times since 2003.

That would have been a disastrous trade for them. Vazquez might be one of the ten best starting pitchers in the MLB, while Uggla might not even be a top ten second baseman.

I really don't see how you could say that. Uggla is easily a top ten second baseman, and Vasquez isn't one of the top ten pitchers in baseball. Sure, he had a career year last season, but that's what it is. A career year. I doubt he does it again.

Exactly, if anything the trade was right down the middle. Vazques has stuff but he is a TOTAL head-case. Look at his numbers with the White Sox. I remember reading somewhere that he had a hot streak entering september, then Ozzie tells him how big it is for him to rely on Vazquez and Vazquez just vomits all over Chicago's playoff hopes in those final starts. He was only as good as he was with the Braves because it was a more easy going situation with intermediate expectations from the fans and a non-hitter friendly ball park compared to where he has been in the past.

Utley, Pedroia, Kinsler, Phillips, Roberts, and Cano are all better than Uggla, with guys like Hill, Lopez, and Polanco arguably better than him. If you also consider Zobrist a second baseman, he would be on that list too. Yeah, it's easy for a Marlin fan to say he's a great player because he hits a lot of home runs for a second baseman and he's one of the more popular guys on the team, but in reality we're just looking at an above average second baseman, not a star.

Vazquez, for the past four or five years now, has consistently been a top 15-20 pitcher. Most guys who are considered better than him aren't even that consistent (i.e., having at least a 4.8 WAR the past four seasons.)

In the past 4 years, Uggla has been #2,#15,#4, and #11 on FanGraphs list of top second baseman according to WAR. Last season, he finished #11, which is one player away from the top ten. On average, for the past 4 seasons, Uggla has been the 8th best Second baseman.

Javier Vasquez, for the past 4 seasons, has been #15, #14, #17, and #4 on Fangraphs list of top pitchers according to WAR. On average, Vasquez has been the 13th best pitcher.

I know Vasquez is better than Uggla. But, Uggla is what the Braves needed. A power threat. An Uggla for Vasquez trade wouldn't have been terrible for the Braves. It certainley would have been better than what they received from the Yankees.

First, that's not how you calculate WAR. Over the past four years, Vazquez had a combined WAR of 21.3. There were two pitchers who had a better combined WAR from '06-'09, Roy Halladay and C.C. Sabathia. Vazquez, over the past four years, has been better than the likes of Johan Santana, Josh Beckett, Tim Lincecum (granted, he only had three years), Dan Haren, Felix Hernandez, Justin Verlander, and Zack Greinke. I'm too lazy to compare Uggla's WAR with other second baseman, but you get the point.

Uggla is the exact opposite of what the Braves needed. They have a good, young second baseman in Martin Prado, and they still have Chipper locked up at third for the next few years. Sure, they could play him at first, even though he never played the position in the majors, and has a grand total of 16 games of experience there at the A+ level. No one knows what his defense would be like there, and even if he somewhat succeeds defensively, his offensive production there would probably be below average for a first baseman.

And for a salary dump, the Braves were lucky to get what they received from the Yankees.

lol, my fault. I'm still learning how to use these stats. And I completely forgot about Martin Prado.

For what it's worth, Uggla has a 14.3 WAR over that last 4 seasons.
