Matt Holliday re-signs with St. Louis

That's gonna start to hurt them in a few years.

Holliday will be 30 on 1/15/10 therefore Pujols and Holliday in the middlle of the lineup is huge I love this deal for both parties Cardinals will be a force to reckon with for awhile

Which means that he will soon start his decline. Plus he's not exactly Willie Mays in the OF, depending on how quick it happens he gets he might be a DH in a few years on an NL team.

Which means he will be 36 in the last year of his contract, way past his prime. His defense is decent now but that always declines with age, and his bat won't be the same in a few years either. Yeah, it will be a great middle of the lineup for the next two or three years, but Holliday should have received a contract like Bay (four years, 5th year vesting option), or at max a five-year contract.

This signing accomplishes two things for the Cardinals. First, they got the guy they wanted (and justifiably needed) in Holliday. Second, they give Albert Pujols a reason to stick around. Will they regret the length of the contract down the road? Probably. But I think it's something they had to do.

Apparently he will be getting paid until 2029

I also read that... We very seldom benefit from being a small market team, but these big contracts over recent years are awful and are only getting worse.
