July 26, 201016 yr Volstad Gave us a solid 6 Innings that we needed. I'm guessing he's back in the rotation for good. Yeh next time out in Petco will give a good indication of whether he is here to stay again. If he got lit up in that spacious park then maybe he needs to work on yet more things
July 26, 201016 yr Volstad was lucky to get the quality start yesterday. He impresses me less and less with every start he has. I know he's still young, but I see him as nothing more than a backend of the rotation guy right now and in the future.

July 26, 201016 yr Hopefully Volstad will come back and be great for us, just like what happened to Ricky last year. The difference is that Ricky is a much better pitcher. When Ricky is on, there is no comparison between their stuff. Volstad will never have a 16 strikeout game. Also, Ricky has certainly had his moments where he gets completely shelled, but he never loses his composure. That's how he's been able to work his way back from some miserable stretches. Volstad seems to let every mediocre or worse outing get to him and get's progressively worse, not better. Maybe, maybe not. But I have always maintained K's are over rated by stats guys. Just get the outs. Alot of Ks means high pitch counts and shorter outings. That explains why Nolasco also averages more innings per start as well. :thumbup The more strikeouts you get, the less dependent you are on your defense. There are very few pitchers in the big leagues who are very good, and don't K a lot of batters. Has to be an extreme groundball pitcher like Tim Hudson, for example. Most aces get strikeouts at a good rate. Strikeouts are not overrated, for a pitcher. They might be more overrated for hitters, if anything.
July 26, 201016 yr The strikeouts don't lead to higher pitch counts than poor command will. If a pitcher is in command of the strike zone, he can dispatch hitters will the K in 5 or less pitches. Pitchers who aren't around the strike zone are wasting pitches getting behind in the count, and then they often get their 3-1 or 3-2 fastball knocked for a hit. You're talking the difference between 5-6 pitches but getting the out and just as many pitches and not. The false assumption that strikeouts waste pitches assume that hitters are putting the ball in play on the first or second pitch of an at-bat for non-strikeout pitchers. That really doesn't happen very often.
July 26, 201016 yr Typical % of batted balls which result in hits: ~30% Typical % of strikeouts which results in hits: ~0%
