Marinez to DL, Volstad promoted

Featured Replies

voRight elbow strain for Jhan Marinez puts him on the 15-Day DL. Volstad promoted and will start Sunday

When did Marinez get hurt?? :mad

And Volstad is on a pitch count???? :| What's going to happen to our bullpen??

Its probably not a legit injury, just something to give him some rest and to get Volstad up.

I still don't understand why a 20 year old who hadn't even gone a full year in AA is up in the majors in the 1st place, especially since he has such a live arm.

He should be a very good asset in our bullpen in a year or two

Injured? I thought he just sucked tonight

I think they just made the injury up so they could keep Mariñez on the roster.

Hopefully Volstad will come back and be great for us, just like what happened to Ricky last year.

The difference is that Ricky is a much better pitcher.

When Ricky is on, there is no comparison between their stuff. Volstad will never have a 16 strikeout game. Also, Ricky has certainly had his moments where he gets completely shelled, but he never loses his composure. That's how he's been able to work his way back from some miserable stretches. Volstad seems to let every mediocre or worse outing get to him and get's progressively worse, not better.

Which is crazy because I remember when Volstad first came up, he was being praised for his composure and ability to work through tough stretches. And he showed that in his rookie season.

Yeah I remember that too. There were actually sources saying he was brought up too soon, but looking at the way he pitched in ST and then the majors, as well as they rough state of our rotation in 2008, I thought they might have held him back for too long.

I really don't know what happened here. It very well could be a case of the sophomore slump (or, more accurately, the sophomore exposing of a guy's real ability level), which guys like Jason Vargas seemed to face and never recover, but Vargas was pitching all-composure and no stuff. It was only a matter of time before they figured him out. Volstad actually has a really solid breaking ball, and when he's spot on with it he's tough to beat. But he hasn't been consistent in harnessing this, though honestly he hasn't been any more inconsistent than Nolasco (whose had his share of none-stuff outings this year) but as I said before, Nolasco seems better able to recover from this.

I've said this before, but I really think that for whatever reason, Volstad is just a 4.50 ERA, .500 at best pitcher. The guys who are stellar their rookie year, then fall back pretty hard, usually end up in between.

It's the usual BS:

When you're getting "lucky" by getting outs when runner are on, you are poised. When bad defense and bad luck plague you, you are mentally tough enough to pitch.

Hopefully Volstad will come back and be great for us, just like what happened to Ricky last year.

Maybe, maybe not. But I have always maintained K's are over rated by stats guys. Just get the outs. Alot of Ks means high pitch counts and shorter outings.

K's mean less opportunities for hits. That's the bottom line.

Exactly correct it is BS. Plus Nolasco and Volstad both seem to be the same 4.50-5 ERA pitchers as evidenced by their numbers last year and now.
