July 30, 201016 yr Maybin just came off the DL. Still needs a lot of starts to get back into the swing of things. Maybin only has 40 AB's in AAA due to spending so much time on the DL. Cody isn't expendable at the moment. For a team with less than a 5% chance to make the playoffs, he's absolutely expendable. It doesn't matter if Maybin just came off of the DL. He's playing somewhere. Morrison has been ailing much of the season too and the Marlins just promoted him to play a position that he has very little experience playing. I'm sorry, but it's a cop out, to say that Maybin can't be playing CF tonight until the end of the season or until he gets hurt again. The Marlins are in a position right now where it doesn't hurt them to have Maybin working things out. He's not in AAA because he still has a lot to learn there. This is a highly valued prospect with a lot of potential we are talking about. The Marlins need him to be getting as many major league at bats as possible before he goes the way of Jeremy Hermida. The Marlins actually believe that Morrison can be effective in the majors right now, Maybin not so much. Besides, its not hurting Maybin to work on things in the minors that will help him later on in the majors. Soon he won't have a chance to work on things against lesser pitching. I was responding to the claim that Maybin can't play in the ML now "because he just came off of the DL," implying that injuries permit Maybin to play in AAA and not MLB. That's ludicrous. He just hit a grand slam. He seems healthy enough. And it would be much more beneficial for Maybin's development if he were given opportunities to hit in the major leagues. He's already proven that he can hit in AAA. He doesn't need to work against lesser pitching. He needs ML ABs. I think personal infatuation with Ross (a fan favorite) is clouding the judgment of several of you. Considering that the chances of the Marlins making the postseason are slim to none, there is absolutely no reason to keep Ross. Since there is a demand for Ross, it is better to sell him now than to sell him in the offseason. The Marlins will get a better return for him now. Ross does not project to be part of the future. If the trade him now, they might get something decent for him compared to the garbage they'll get after the season's over. If Maybin isn't healthy, just put Bonifacio in CF and Luna/Murphy/Helms at 3B. The Marlins aren't competing so they can be creative. I love Cody, but he is incredibly expendanble (despite what those here say), especially for this season.
July 30, 201016 yr I agree with el penguino. Regarding the question of whether or not Coghlan can play CF...the answer is no. However, if need be, Stanton can play CF.
July 30, 201016 yr Read what Frisaro is saying about Ross/Cantu: Cody Ross still available The Marlins aren't going to force anything, but for the right price, they will trade outfielder Cody Ross by Saturday's 4 p.m. ET Trade Deadline. The Braves and Red Sox remain teams interested in Ross, who is batting .272 with nine homers and 52 RBIs. Several other clubs could be in the mix, and the Marlins are on the fence of which direction to go with the outfielder. One source said it may go down to whether the Marlins win or loss on Friday at the Padres. Ross, who is making $4.45 million in his second season of arbitration, does not fit into the team's long-range plans. The Marlins on Thursday traded Jorge Cantu, and the team cleared all but $600,000 of the $2.2 million that remains on his $6 million deal. A prime reason Cantu was dealt was because he didn't fit into the club's future. The Marlins have several outfielders they are wanting to get a look at, including Bryan Petersen, Emilio Bonifacio and Cameron Maybin, who is in Triple-A New Orleans. When the Marlins traded Cantu, the team noted that it was looking to position the roster for now and into the future. In 2012, they move into a retractable-roof ballpark, and they want to be as competitive as possible. Already, 20-year-old Mike Stanton is gaining valuable playing time in right field, and he projects to be a future star. By moving Cantu on Thursday, prospect Logan Morrison was given the job in left field. The Marlins have high hopes for Morrison, who promises to be a centerpiece player in the years to come. Everything in italics can be said about a Ross trade too. The big difference is that the Marlins could have Ross next season after paying him a lot in arbitration. Remember that Maybin is out of options, so he must play next year before they lose him. He needs ML ABs. Assuming that Morrison and Stanton will be in the OF, there is no need for Ross Let the Marlins spend their money in the offseason on Nolasco, Uggla, and bullpen help.
