November 18, 200322 yr hot damn! NEW YORK -- OF #25 won his record sixth National League MVP award Tuesday, becoming the first player to get the honor in three consecutive years. The San Francisco Giants outfielder, the only player to win an MVP award more than three times, received 28 of 32 first-place votes and 426 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Albert Pujols was second with three first-place votes and 303 points. Atlanta Braves outfielder Gary Sheffield got the other first-place vote and was third with 247 points. At 39 years, 3? months, Bonds is the second-oldest MVP, trailing Pittsburgh's Willie Stargell, who was a few months older when he tied for the award in 1979. Bonds had a difficult season in which his father, Bobby, died in August. Still, Bonds hit .341 with 45 homers and 90 RBI, leading the major leagues in slugging percentage (.749), on-base percentage (.529) and walks. Pujols hit a major league-high .359 with 43 homers and 124 RBI and led the major leagues with 137 runs. He became just the 10th player to finish second in consecutive MVP votes, the first since the Dodgers' Mike Piazza in 1996 and 1997. San Francisco players have won the award four straight times, with Jeff Kent finishing first in the 2000 vote. The Yankees accomplished that feat twice with Yogi Berra (1954-55) and Mickey Mantle (1956-57), and Roger Maris (1960-61), Mantle (1962) and Elton Howard (1963). Bonds gets a $500,000 bonus for winning the award. Sheffield, who became a free agent after the season, earned $75,000 for finishing third. Florida's Juan Pierre gets $200,000 for finishing 10th.
November 18, 200322 yr $200,000 for finishing 10th? Wow. A few more cars with teal 24's for Juan! He deserves every cent.
November 18, 200322 yr 200K is pretty damn good for 10th. Thats the Christmas bonus I'm hoping for this year
November 18, 200322 yr 7 players ahead of him get no bonus while he gets 200k. He picked the right agent
November 18, 200322 yr Derrek Lee and Pudge recieved votes in a mock MVP vote on the baseball primer site.
November 18, 200322 yr Lowell finished 11th in the voting. Castillo, Pudge, Cabrera, Lee, and Willis also received votes. Cabrera and Lee each got a single 8th place vote and Willis got a 10th place vote.
November 18, 200322 yr damn that's a lot of marlins!!! even cabs got in the voting, that's a pretty big honor for a rook even if its just one vote for 8th
November 18, 200322 yr MVP voting is so weird. I can't believe Cabrera got a vote. Or Derrek Lee. You also have to wonder about the goofs who voted Bonds 3rd. And how is it that a player can get 2 7th place votes, and nothing else?
November 18, 200322 yr MVP voting is fascinating. Not who wins, but who gets stuff like 8th, 9th, and 10th.
November 18, 200322 yr MVP voting is fascinating. Not who wins, but who gets stuff like 8th, 9th, and 10th. I'm going to inaugurate the "MVHuh? Award" right now. First runner up. In the AL MVP race. Keith Foulke, for his 3rd place vote. Foulke also received 7 8th, 9th, and 10th place votes. The man had a fine season, but still, he's a closer who had 5 blown saves. How valuable is that? And the winner. Also in the AL MVP race. Derek Jeter, for his 2nd place vote. Jeter had one other vote, a 10th place vote, and that was it. Jeter played in 119 games this year, finishing with 10 homers and 52 RBIs. Congratulations, Derek.
November 18, 200322 yr You also have to wonder about the goofs who voted Bonds 3rd. they're called dodger fans
November 18, 200322 yr Jeter played in 119 games this year, finishing with 10 homers and 52 RBIs. Congratulations, Derek.
November 19, 200322 yr Isnt this vote taken BEFORE the playoffs? If so, then Juan P being 10th is very, very interesting.
November 19, 200322 yr I just found out that the money is from the marlins organzation. It was written in his contract if he finished hbetween 7th and 10th for mvp he recieves $200,000. that sux for the marlins payroll situation. I had originally thought it was from a pool of money from MLB.
November 20, 200322 yr Actually, its $200,000 added to his contract for each of the next two years. It was part of his contract he signed with the Rockies which the Marlins inherited.
