December 3, 201015 yr The people who started this mess are the PC, easily-offended crowd. If you are going to bash anyone from distracting from real issues, blame them. Otherwise this debate wouldn't even exist. That's true but it's true both ways. If there weren't people so easily offended by some "war against Christmas" this wouldn't exist. Nobody is being forced to do anything. No, it's not. I'm talking about direct causality--cause and effect. Christians are only complaining (and I think you repeatedly calling this response as them being "offended" is a misnomer for reasons I've already supplied) because of the preceding actions by non-Christians. There's only a "war against Christmas" that perturbs Christians because non-Christians raised the issue in the first place. Yes, you can say that Christians don't have to be perturbed by these "demands" but that doesn't mean that they started this debate. Frankly, I don't even see how this point can be challenged. That is, unless you are going to deny that there are people complaining about Christian holidays, but I don't see how that can be argued, either. Whether or not this can be called a "war" is immaterial, but there has absolutely been a movement in this country over the last several years where a PC-driven bunch has caused a fuss over nothing. I don't really blame some Christians for responding to this, but I don't endorse some of the overreactions. And I course, I think most of you are overstating the degree to which these people overreact. What I wrote above wasn't even meant to be argumentative. It was just a simple statement of fact that was supposed to indicate that there is one group of people being spared from the eye rolling in this thread, which seems to be the result of religious/political bias. I disagree. There's only a "War against Christmas" because Fox News like to find something to fire up the Christian base during December. Have you ever heard of the boycotting of a store for saying Christmas? I sure as hell haven't. But like clockwork over the last 5-6 years some major company (Sears, Walmart, Best Buy all come to mind) have had boycotts against them for saying "holiday" instead of Christmas. This year it's Dick Sports getting the brunt of the right-wing anger. Are you gonna attack the right or actually debate? (sorry for the double post) Don't pretend that I attacked anyone just so you don't have to combat my points. That's a shocking amount of cowardice.
December 3, 201015 yr The Sun-Sentinel has an online poll on 'happy holidays' vs. 'merry Christmas'. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/opinion/todaysbuzz/monday/sfl-happy-holidays-buzz-poll-11292010,0,1074654,post.poll Given that Broward is one of the most liberal and most Jewish counties in the country I'm surprised 75% of the people who voted on their poll voted for: "The name of the holiday is "Christmas," not "holiday." We need to put Christ back in Christmas, despite all the people and media who want to take it away. In my opinion I see no good reason in saying 'happy holidays' instead of 'merry Christmas'.
December 3, 201015 yr There's really no more reason to have it one way or the other. Tradition isn't a good argument. I'm happy to reconsider if someone has a better one. The Happy Holidays crowd at least has a "we're the traditionally discriminated-against minority" to go along with their "I'm offended" cries, whatever difference that may constitute, as compared with the "We've controlled the country since 1776 and we still largely do" which implicitly accompanies the "I'm offended" Christian crowd.
December 4, 201015 yr Choosing to say happy holidays doesn't bug me, being forced to so I don't "offend" anyone bugs me and offends me. Political correctness offends me. Who's forcing you to say Happy Holidays? I meant the idea of it. I don't have the faintest idea of what you are upset about, then. Which is, of course, the whole point. You are led to believe there is a widespread attack on the things you hold dear, and when pressed as to why it upsets you, you have nothing concrete to point at. There's just a vague idea that there is a war on Christmas and christians. Christmas is fine. Then you're looking through blinders. Are you going to post contentless one liners or actually debate anyone. I ask the question knowing the answer. You, as a christian, are not persecuted. To pretend you are is outrageous. Nobody is stopping you from celebrating Christmas or even saying "Merry Christmas" at all. That some stores choose to say "Happy Holidays" rather than potentially lose business does not mean Christmas is under attack. Do you really want to be a victim so badly that THIS is where you are looking for it?

December 5, 201015 yr I heard next year Obama will be forbidding giant inflatable christmas santas in our front yards. And Snowmen too? http://www.kxly.com/...011/detail.html

If some are offended with Merry Christmas and others are offended by happy holidays why not use the term that offends the less number of people? That's the fairest way about it.

If some are offended with Merry Christmas and others are offended by happy holidays why not use the term that offends the less number of people? That's the fairest way about it. That doesn't work. It only works if your group is the one with the most amount of people. It isn't about fairness at all. It's about insecure people being hypersensitive to differences they claim to hold with pride but actually bear more like a self-righteous cross. It's about those people sucking it the f*** up and realizing that saying Merry Christmas isn't an attack on their religion; it's a celebration of someone else's - and if they have a problem with that, then we're crying intolerance at the wrong group.
December 7, 201015 yr I have to ask again, who is being forcibly stopped from saying "Merry Christmas"?

December 7, 201015 yr I have to ask again, who is being forcibly stopped from saying "Merry Christmas"? Who is using the word 'forced' here? What mystikol said and also, I don't see how you can say someone is being intolerant when all they are going is asking that you not say a word. You are free to say whatever you want, and that might offend someone, and they may request that you not say that, but nobody is being forced into anything, so I think you are throwing the word intolerant around a bit freely.
December 7, 201015 yr Basically, my view is, until you are actually forced to stop saying Merry Christmas, it's much ado about nothing.

You are free to say whatever you want, and that might offend someone, and they may request that you not say that, but nobody is being forced into anything, so I think you are throwing the word intolerant around a bit freely. I think you're just defining the word a bit selectively. Why would 'Merry Christmas' offend anyone? Either they're intolerant to the celebration or thrive on being perennial victims and are looking for something to offend them, which usually breeds intolerance in itself. People act as if intolerance is only a tool of the majority. If a white American would get pissed off by someone saying 'Happy Hanukkah,' how would you view it? The tantrum police would be all on it. Basically, my view is, until you are actually forced to stop saying Merry Christmas, it's much ado about nothing. So until you have an opponent's army knocking on your door, it's much ado about nothing. Sadly, this been America's MO all throughout history and there are still people in this country that believe this is the way to go. You're better off acting on something at the first whiff of it instead of just waiting around until it's got its teeth inserted deeply in your asscheek. This isn't about some war against people who orgasm at the thought of a PC world. It's about being aware that these people exist to a larger extent that some people like to admit.
December 7, 201015 yr You still run into the same issue, though: Why do people in favor of "Merry Christmas" have the right to take up arms, but those who favor some other phrase not have the same right?
December 7, 201015 yr You still run into the same issue, though: Why do people in favor of "Merry Christmas" have the right to take up arms, but those who favor some other phrase not have the same right? Because those who don't want to say Merry Christmas can say Happy Holidays, but those who choose to say Merry Christmas are sometimes coerced into changing. They aren't forced, but if you look down at something enough, it has the same effect more or less.

December 8, 201015 yr So people who aren't being forced to stop anything are saying there is a war on them, and they are not the ones who are overreacting.
December 8, 201015 yr So people who aren't being forced to stop anything are saying there is a war on them, and they are not the ones who are overreacting. Who cares about what they're calling it? The fact of the matter is that they have a valid argument that there's a growing number of people whose hypersensitivities have made saying 'Merry Christmas' something incorrect in circumstances in which it shouldn't be.
December 8, 201015 yr You start a lot of "who cares?" threads. There's always going to be religious indifference. Deal with it.
December 9, 201015 yr I had the final day of one of my classes today. My professor wrote "Merry Christmas" on the board and I jokingly screamed "It's Happy Holidays now!" He wrote "Merry Christmas or whatever".
