April 8, 201115 yr Author I remember right around the time of the Beatles, people were debating if they liked the Dave Clark 5 better.
April 8, 201115 yr ...the surviving members of The Beach Boys (Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Alan Jardine, and Bruce Johnston) are performing in venues and on tours across the globe. Man, that's pretty misleading, since Brian Wilson hasn't performed with the Beach Boys since the 80's, and Al Jardine stopped touring with them in 1998.
April 8, 201115 yr I remember right around the time of the Beatles, people were debating if they liked the Dave Clark 5 better. Which serves the point that there's a complete difference between a legacy and history as it happened. The Beatles left the greatest legacy in all of rock and roll history, hands down.
April 8, 201115 yr Now this is cool! Too bad it is on my cousin's bridal shower. I think the shower is during the day so maybe I can go.

Which serves the point that there's a complete difference between a legacy and history as it happened. The Beatles left the greatest legacy in all of rock and roll history, hands down. Not really. The Beach Boys released Pet Sounds between the releases of Rubber Soul and Revolver. Rubber Soul was the number one album in the US for 8 weeks and sold 1.2 million copies in the first 9 days of release. The Beach Boys released Pet Sounds, which peaked at #10. The Beatles then released Revolver, which spent 7 weeks at number 1. Nobody competed with the Beatles in any meaningful sense of the word.

Pet Sounds has been their lasting legacy and considered their studio masterpiece, yet it was far from their most commercially successful album. At the same time, what was perhaps the most groundbreaking Beatles single, Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane, was also the first Beatles single since their break to fail to go number 1.
April 9, 201115 yr The point is that the Beach Boys didn't compete with the Beatles at the time. The relative success or failure of a given Beatles' single doesn't really have anything to do with that conversation. But "Penny Lane" did reach No. 1 on the US charts.

My point is that chart success really doesn't mean all that much. John Lennon's Imagine went to #6, while Whatever Get's You Through the Night went to #1. Everyone on Earth knows the first song, nobody knows the second.

Everyone on Earth knows the first song, nobody knows the second. As with music I must tie everything to U2. Both With or without You and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For are U2's only #1 hit singles, released back to back. However, often regarded as their best song, Where the Streets Have No Name only reached #13. On the following album, Desire peaked at #3. Ask most casual fans and they don't even know Desire all that well. Charting positions are helpful tools but serve no purpose in a comparative argument between two bands.
April 9, 201115 yr Yawn. Love the Beach Boys from the 60's. These are not those Beach Boys. This is less interesting to me than Beatles Tribute. I will never pay money to see someone who was associated with "Kokomo." Nobody is. They are paying money to watch a baseball game. The rest is just icing on the cake. When most don't like the post game entertainment, they leave after the game. I bet not one of them feels like they got ripped off. Unless they are an "It's all about me" type person.

In the UK, a crap pop-rock boyband called McFly have more #1 singles than Michael Jackson and Queen.
