Pro Player Stadium -- The Florida Marlins today announced they have invited 12 players to 2004 Spring Training as non-roster invitees. The following list includes eight pitchers: LHP Cedrick Bowers, RHP Bryce Florie, RHP Mike Fyhrie, RHP Delvin James, RHP David Manning, RHP Marty McLeary, RHP Scott Sanders and RHP Aaron Small; two infielders: Felipe Crespo and Jason Wood; one outfielder: Ryan Christenson; and one catcher: Matt Treanor. Vice President of Player Development and Scouting Jim Fleming made the announcement.

Bowers (6-2, 220) spent the 2003 season pitching for AAA Durham in the Tampa Bay Devil Rays system. He appeared in 32 games (eight starts) and posted a 4-3 record with two saves and a 4.41 ERA in 83.2 innings of work. Originally a fourth-round pick by the Rays in 1996, the 25-year-old Bowers has appeared in 241 minor league games (136 starts) and has a career record of 44-53 with a 4.05 ERA.

 

Florie (5-11, 195) did not pitch in the 2002 season, but saw 18 relief appearances with AAA Sacramento in the Oakland organization in 2003 (4-6, 5.08 ERA). The 33-year-old right-hander has a career Major League record of 20-24 with two saves and a 4.47 ERA in 261 games (29 starts) with San Diego, Milwaukee, Detroit and Boston. He last pitched in the Majors with Boston in 2001 and went 0-1 with an 11.42 ERA in seven relief appearances. Florie was selected by the San Diego Padres in the fifth round of the 1988 June Free Agent Draft.

 

Fyhrie (6-2, 200) split the 2003 season with the AAA affiliates of Cleveland, Kansas City and Florida, combining to post a 9-9 record with a 4.56 ERA in 28 games (22 starts). The 33-year-old right-hander joined the Marlins on August 19 and went 1-0 with a 2.53 ERA in five relief appearances with Albuquerque. Fyhrie has a career Major League record of 2-11 with a 4.00 ERA in 84 games (11 starts). He last pitched in the Majors in 2002 with Oakland and went 2-4 with a 4.44 ERA in 16 games (four starts). Fyhrie was originally drafted by Kansas City in the 12th round of the 1991 June Free Agent Draft.

 

James (6-4, 220) posted a 5-10 record with a 5.23 ERA in 34 games (21 starts) for AAA Durham in the Tampa Bay system in 2003. Originally selected by the Rays in the 14th round of the 1996 draft, the 25-year-old James has a career minor league record of 47-56 with a 4.32 ERA in 192 games (131 starts). He made eight Major League appearances (six starts) with Tampa Bay in 2002, posting an 0-3 record and a 6.55 ERA.

 

Manning (6-3, 210) spent the majority of the 2003 season with AAA Indianapolis, and made two starts with the Milwaukee Brewers. The 31-year-old right-hander from West Palm Beach faced the Marlins in his most recent start, August 9 at Miller Park, and allowed six runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings. He has a career Major League record of 0-2 with a 16.20 ERA in two games (both starts). With the AAA Indians, Manning went 6-8 with a 4.91 ERA in 23 games (17 starts) and holds a career minor league record of 52-64 with a 4.44 ERA in 260 games (143 starts).

 

McLeary (6-5, 220) was signed by the Marlins on April 29, 2003, and made 31 appearances (three starts) between AA Carolina and AAA Albuquerque. He posted a 1-1 record with a 1.80 ERA in 11 games (two starts) with the Mudcats before joining the Isotopes and compiling a 1-1 mark and a 4.32 ERA in 20 games, 19 in relief. Originally a 10th round selection by Boston in 1997, the 28-year-old McLeary has pitched in 249 minor league games (41 starts) and has a career record of 29-41 with a 4.19 ERA.

 

Sanders (6-4, 220) spent the 2003 season with AAA Albuquerque, his second stint in the Marlins system. The 34- year-old right-hander posted a 7-5 record with a 3.92 ERA in 19 game starts with the Isotopes after rejoining Florida's system in May. Sanders first joined the Marlins in June of 2000 and went 2-3 with a 7.18 ERA in six game starts for AAA Calgary before his release in July. Sanders, originally a first-round pick of San Diego (32nd overall) in 1990, has appeared in 235 Major League games (88 starts) with San Diego, Seattle, Detroit and Chicago (NL) and holds a career record of 34-45 with a 4.86 ERA in 681.2 innings.

 

Small (6-5, 220) split the 2003 campaign between AA Carolina and AAA Albuquerque in the Marlins' system, combining for a 9-8 record and a 4.70 ERA in 22 games (21 starts). The 31-year-old right-hander was originally drafted by Toronto in the 22nd round of the 1989 draft and has appeared in 139 Major League games (three starts) with Toronto, Florida, Oakland, Arizona and Atlanta. Small has a career Major League record of 15-10 with a 5.27 ERA and last pitched in the Major Leagues with the Braves in 2002, posting a 0-0 record and a 27.00 ERA, allowing one run in 0.1 inning on April 6 vs. the Mets. Small pitched with the Fish in 1995, when he went 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA in seven relief appearances after a 2-1, 2.88 ERA season (33 games) with AAA Charlotte.

 

Crespo (5-11, 200) played for AAA Louisville in the Cincinnati system in 2003, hitting .244 with 20 doubles, six home runs and 48 RBI in 107 games. The 30-year-old switch-hitting infielder was originally drafted by Toronto in the third round of the 1990 draft and has appeared in 262 Major League games with the Blue Jays, San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies. He has a career Major League batting average of .245 with 22 doubles, four triples, 10 homers and 68 RBI. Crespo last played in the Majors with the Phillies in 2001 and hit .171 with five RBI in 33 games. He played for Yomiuri in Japan during the 2002 season.

 

Wood (6-1, 200) completed his second season with the Marlins in 2003, hitting .296 with 16 homers and 83 RBI in 128 games at AAA Albuquerque. The 33-year-old infielder joined Florida's system in March of 2002 and hit .315 with 15 homers and 70 RBI in 121 games for AAA Calgary. Wood has played 40 games in the Majors (.221, 2 HR, 9 RBI), including time with Oakland and Detroit in 1998 and the Tigers again in 1999. Wood has played in 1,431 career minor league games and is a career .269 hitter with 136 home runs and 776 RBI.

 

Christenson (6-0, 190) played in 52 games for AAA Oklahoma in the Texas Rangers system in 2003 and hit .313 with five homers and 24 RBI. A former 10th round pick of Oakland in 1995, Christenson has seen action in 392 Major League games with the A's, Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers, and is a career .232 hitter with 14 homers and 86 RBI. He last played in the Majors in 2002, hitting .155 with a home run and three RBI in 22 games with Milwaukee.

 

Treanor (6-2, 220) completed his seventh season in the Marlins system in 2003, playing in 98 games with Albuquerque, his first full year at the AAA level. The 27-year-old catcher hit .273 with a career-high 11 homers and 40 RBI with the Isotopes. Treanor, a former fourth round pick by Kansas City in 1994, was acquired by the Marlins in exchange for LHP Matt Whisenant in July of 1997. Treanor has appeared in 849 minor league games and is a career .243 hitter with 55 homers and 308 RBI.

All you Sanders lovers, he's getting his chance.

Treanor is a real good guy. I talked to him in the dugout for almost a whole game earlier this year.

Treanor seems to be the only player of interest - at least to me. He could be a capable backup at this point, I think Redmond is too expensive to keep - despite what happens with Castro. I say, let Pudge go, give Castro the job. If Castro is found guilty, contact Santiago - maybe he would like to end his career here (since he was our inaugural catcher...). We could save butt loads and sign Vlad...
