November 25, 200322 yr While doing my morning DLee search I came across this from the Arizona Republic regarding trade possibilities for Lee or Sexson if Shilling allows himself to be traded and they have some payroll flexibility. What's interesting is the list of possible trade candidates mentioned in various deals. Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems the Herald, Sun-Sentinel and Palm Beach Post all missed the DLee in Baltimore story. They were too busy I guess with heaping praise and sympathy on Zo (you'd think the guy still played here or contributed anything in the last three years) and of course mandatory multi-page Dolphins coverage to cover hometown baseball. But I digress. ------------------------------ Trade could be 1st step in revamping of roster Don Ketchum The Arizona Republic Nov. 25, 2003 12:00 AM Pitcher Curt Schilling tipped over a big domino Monday with his announcement of a possible deal that would send him from the Diamondbacks to the Boston Red Sox. How many more dominoes will fall, and what effect will they have on the 2004 Opening Day roster, as Arizona attempts to pare its payroll? Shedding Schilling's $12 million salary is essential for the Diamondbacks. They already have earmarked more than $65 million to 10 players for a 2004 payroll that is not expected to exceed $80 million. Schilling's departure would leave left-hander Randy Johnson, 40, as the lone ace. Johnson, however, will be coming off a season cut short by surgery on his right knee. Right-hander Brandon Webb likely would step into the No. 2 spot after challenging for the NL Rookie of the Year Award in 2003. Right-hander Elmer Dessens is expected to be No. 3, although he could be No. 4 if the club re-signs right-hander Miguel Batista, a free agent after Arizona declined a $5 million option for 2004. Left-hander Chris Capuano and right-handers John Patterson and Andrew Good would be candidates for the rotation, although the team could part with any or all of them in deals. The team is pursuing Milwaukee first baseman Richie Sexson, who would provide the Diamondbacks with right-handed power they have long sought. Sexson averaged 39.6 home runs and 117 RBIs over the past three seasons with the Brewers and is due to make $8.6 million in 2004, the final year of a four-year contract. The Diamondbacks' young pitchers could be part of a deal for Sexson, along with infielders Junior Spivey and Craig Counsell and perhaps outfielder Danny Bautista. A similar combination could be used to bring in Florida first baseman Derrek Lee if the Sexson deal doesn't occur. The Los Angeles Dodgers also are interested in Sexson, although they might go with Korean first baseman Seung-yeop Lee. The Diamondbacks could gain more financial flexibility by trading Matt Mantei, who picked up a $7 million option for 2004, and giving the closer's job to Jose Valverde, who had 10 saves last season. The left side of the Arizona infield appears set with Shea Hillenbrand at third base and Alex Cintron at shortstop. Left fielder Luis Gonzalez appears to be walking the tightrope with an iffy right shoulder. If healthy, he would stabilize the outfield with center fielder Steve Finley. Right field continues to be a question mark. Bautista is a possibility, and the team could decide to sign Raul Mondesi, who hit .302 with eight homers and 22 RBIs in 45 games after being acquired in a trade with the New York Yankees. Mondesi would have to agree to take considerably less than the $13 million he received in 2003.

Obviously they wouldn't be the keys to the deal but it is interesting that we could see one or both back on the Marlins.

I think this will have a bigger effect on the offseason than most realize - because it forces the Yankees to counter, which means more spending - which means driving the market up. The Red Sox, Gammons hallucinates, are trying to trade Ramirez for A Rod. That would drive the Boss crazy. Should the D backs trim payroll, they could add Lee - I dont know why they would trim $12MM only to turn around and add $8.6 (Sexson) - it seems smarter to add Lee at $7MM max.

November 26, 200322 yr Derrek Lee is a beast. That's all I will say. i thought he was "certified crap" no? for get his total stats.. dont u remeber how crap he was in playoffs and the reg. season?
