floridafly
Today at 5:30, some players along with Rich and Tommy will be at one of the Tommy Bahama's on Las Olas Blvd. I've never been to one of these things but I just got my license a few weeks ago so it seems like a really cool thing to check out. Anyone else going?
floridafly
Thanks, I'll try haha. And I wonder how much the rain delay is going to alter event plants...
FutureGM
I don't know if I would even bother in this weather...the thing may not even happen...
GoFishGoMs628
I was going to go then I decided theres not really any point. I'll attend more events when the new stadium is here. The Marlins continue to suck at home.

FutureGM
So did anyone go to this?
floridafly
Yup! I'll give a little recap. It was delayed with the weather, so it ran from about 7-8:30ish. Or at least that's when the team started showing up. It was a nice quite little atmosphere. They had a guy playing the steel drums and then a little catering cart set up at the side. The store was never too crowded and it was full of friendly and knowledgeable people. I actually chatted up this guy that turned out to be a prominent member of the community foundation named Alan and he gave me his card if I ever needed anything. Rich and Tommy came in first, although Rich got stopped at the door by some people and they began chatting. They were just as friendly as you would expect. I talked with Tommy a bit and he even asked me what was good at the food cart haha. Such a cool, down to earth guy. When I talked to Rich, I thought it would be cool to have an actual question in mind for him. So I asked about Bonifacio (who was literally like 20 feet away) and if he had a mechanical change to go along with the mental in his newly found prowess on the basepath. Rich said that it was mainly the fact that Jack took all the pressure off of him and let him be at ease. Boni always had the skillset to be highly successful but just never used it for fear of failure. But now when Jack tells Boni to run, he expects Boni to run no matter what. We've heard it before, but its still pretty cool to hear it straight from his mouth. First of the players to come in was Buck. He stood out pretty easily. Well, they all did. But Buck is a really big guy. I eventually chatted with him and told him about how during opening day, a fight broke out in my section. (300something, it was directly behind home plate) And at that exact moment, Buck hit his grandslam and the fight subsided haha. Some other guy vouched for me, saying he was in an adjacent section and saw it. Buck said he was glad he could "play peacemaker". Took a picture with him. Really cool guy. Next person that came in was Boni. He's actually built pretty well, and but I might have a little bit of height on him. I'm around 5 '11. I Didn't really talk to him. A lot of people were congratulating him on the hit streak and what not. I was going to ask him to take a picture with me in spanish. I'm pretty sure it is "Podrias sacar un foto conmigo". At least he would have understood. But I got nervous and couldn't roll the r and gringo'd out, so I asked in english. He was more than happy to oblige haha. Another cool guy. He spent most of his time looking at shirts. LoMo came in 3rd... but got stopped outside by fans for a while. So he didn't actually make it into Tommy Bahama for a while. People just tend to gravitate towards the guy. Such a nice person and actually willing to give thought into a conversation and not just keep moving. He actually was talking with this little kid about his Nintendo DS (which the kid got all the Marlins people who were there to autograph) and stuff like that. I asked him a question about his tattoos. He has pretty much a full sleeve on one upper arm and possibly the other one too. He said it was all in commemoration of his dad. Its kinda hard to explain but it looked like a $100 bill with a bunch of stuff around it. Also I asked if he was going to go back to support the troops this offseason. He said he would like to, but the team tries to rotate players around so he doubts he will get the opportunity again. Last - the man of the hour. As soon as Bryan Petersen stepped in, the entire store began clapping for him haha. He was blushing a bit but seemed pretty humble. He told me that he got the ball back and he just gave the person a signed bat in return. He tried to play it off cool and did a pretty good job. He's actually not a very big person at all. I thought he would be bigger. Anyway, he was really nice and buddied up with LoMo for a lot of the time. That's about it. I heard John Sultzer (the producer of the broadcast) was there but couldn't really spot him out of a crowd. And a Mermaid was there as well. She was a pretty big baseball fan too (shocker, I know) and we talked for a bit before the players got there. She was in charge of looking over the items at the silent auction. Oh! And Rich Waltz put in a bid for the John Buck helmet :lol I didn't see how much it went for, but Rich put his bid at 700. I left a little before 8:30 and it was winding down. Hutton and his wife left to go out somewhere and eat. Boni left 1st I think. He sure is a sneaky man. Towards the end, some random Blue Jay fans visiting from Toronto wandered in and were shocked to see John Buck there. It was pretty funny. Eh, thats about all I can think of offhand. If you have any questions, ill try to answer them.

SilverBullet
Towards the end, some random Blue Jay fans visiting from Toronto wandered in and were shocked to see John Buck there. It was pretty funny. For some reason this made me laugh outloud. Just try and put urself in the shoes of those Jays fans... traveling from Toronto to Miami, Florida, walking into a random store and there's one of your team's former players. Thats a hell of a coincidence and perfect timing. Memorable moment for them I'm sure. That's like me running into Matt Treanor in a Wendy's in Vancouver. A similarly odd thing happened to me years ago. I was on vacation in Seattle, and when I got out of the cab at the hotel I nearly ran into Jorge Julio. Turns out the hotel I was staying at was the visiting team hotel, and at that point the Baltimore Orioles were all there. Unfortunately I believe this was after Ripken had already retired.
